If it is so rare - how is there so much experience with the product that a Nolan Ryan is guaranteed?

    I'm suspicious
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

One would think the cards included would be single-picture cards, not ones showing multiple players like Ryan/Koosman. Maybe Con can shed some light on this rather skeptical auction and the original contents of the board game...........

Brooks and Seaver were low numbers, and Ryan is #177. My catalog only shows 3 groups, so I'm not sure how many series there were, but if Ryan was in the first series, there's a sporting chance to find one. They probably would've just taken the same sheets to cut up and insert into every game, so if one of those is the Ryan sheet, he'd be in all of them. Did one 1968 sheet have Seaver, Brooks, and Ryan on it?
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

This is the same one that was listed about 6 months ago. According to the seller , he had a buyer at 4500 when I inquired then. Obviously , that didn't work out and it is back up again. My understanding from everywhere that I have read is that these cards have there own print run , basically their own sheet. word has it that the trademark on the back is a milton bradley trade mark or some variation ther of instead of the the standard topps one.

the seller is making his statements based on 2 separate contacts that said they had opened sets which contained the exact same cards. I thought it was a cool piece and a good gamble for $1000 or so back then but not at what this seller is trying to get. still a neat item

this item has been listed 4 times now, 2x b4 the seller ended the auction early, the other 2x it did not meet the reserve. back in the late 80'z I handled such a set and it did indeed include a Ryan, however from what I understand not all did. this set is decent in that the cards are still under shrink wrap. is it the original shrink?

the set i handled sold for around 450.00 back then, the cards though were not in mint, being 68's though, many dings and such are well hidden. also back then the condition of the box was very important.

the game does include the ryan. my friend about 12 years ago pulled the ryan and seaver from the game. i think the reasoning behind such a high bid is that it has different markings on the card? thus being yet another ryan rookie variation. this has not been confirmed that there is a difference in the cards vs the regular 68's? so until it is proven that they are actually diffrent from the regular you are taking a chance on getting a load of 68's that are plentiful in high grade for 5x's the price?

they are the milton bradley variety
    Good for you.
  • Does his guarantee mean that if the Ryan does not show up, he will refund the entire purchase price? I didnt exactly see what his guarantee really means or if it is a guarantee at all.

If its not in there, he's left with an open package of cards.

BTW, I remember my neighbor actually having this game when it came out. I was around 10 at the time (yes, I am old) and I remember because I was the one with all of the velveeta boxes of cards and this was just about his entire collection.
  • Does anyone have a scan of one of these on the back for the rest of us to see?

So far I hear a lot of: "My friend/ex-lover/some guy who knew this other guy/etc. broke the set and did/did't get the Nolan and it was a different variation.

I am looking for Nolan Ryan cards, esp. OPC and rare oddball issues, graded or not. Also I need quite a few 1956 Topps, PSA 6 or higher

    Current Sets in Progress:
1956 Topps Master Set PSA 6 or better
    1978 Topps PSA 9 or 10
    1981 Donruss Golf PSA 9 or 10
    1989 Upper Deck PSA 9 or 10
    Nolan Ryan Master Set
    Pete Rose Master Set

    Milton Bradley (Unknown)
    1968
    WG-UNC

Topps and Milton Bradley joined forces to produce something called the Win A Card Game using baseball cards as part of the game. Football and Non Sports cards were also used and it is said that the key to identifying the Milton Bradley version of the baseball cards is in the copyright line on the back of the cards. I've never been able to figure out what the difference is, but there are reports that one of the baseball cards is the Nolan Ryan rookie. Either 22 or 44 baseball cards were issued in the game, but nobody can say conclusively which figure is correct.

    RyanF;

No one knows for sure if the Ryan in this box (if it's there) is anything special. It is all rumor and innuendo. I have never seen the difference in the copyright and I have never seen singles from this set for sale that are identified as coming from this set. I might be the high bidder, but I haven't met his reserve, which seems too high. I am skeptical of this box as it has been around the block so many times. I am skeptical that these elastics could remain intact under shrinkwrap for 35+ years. Plus, the box is pretty beat up so I am sure the cards that come out of here are no better than PSA 7 as the corners will most likely be blunted.

But, I am bidding because I believe in the Loch Ness Monster, Sasquatch, and that the Red Sox will eventually win the World Series. If any of those are true, then maybe there is an elusive 4th legitimate Ryan rookie card in this box. image

Is the shill in ? thank goodness for scott as I don't think he wants to sp[end 3k on this item given his situation.
  • Duncan,

For a potential Ryan card like this, it was worth trying at $2999.99. I have an empty credit card and 0% APR checks, it was going to be my b-day gift to myself if I won. I was actually a little surprised that I went over the reserve.

I'm a little pissed it was a zero feedback bidder that won, it makes it smell like a shill, but what can you do.

Scott, it is eather a shill or someone who does not want anyone to know they are buying it and created a new id since the ebay ID was created the day the auction ended. Scott, my guess is you are all right. too many uncertainties on this auction. i was told by the seller that he had a buyer for 4500 months ago. did someone buy it and return it ? was he just trying to get more money out of me? like keith said , those elastics look pretty good for being 30 years old. alot better than any 30 year old elastics I have. it probably wasn't worth the risk and imagine opening it and it not having the ryan and the seller telling you to go sh*t in a hat.

    congrats red sox !!!!!!!!!!!!
