Raw Coins from Forum Members. Buying ?

FairlanemanFairlaneman Posts: 10,423 ✭✭✭✭✭
Do you or would you buy raw coins from a forum member ? If you have were the coins graded within your standards ? If not how far off was the grade that was given ? No names need to be mentioned at all.

I have bought a couple but they were just things that looked cool and the grade really made no difference. Maybe in the future more will be bought just to see if the standards I use are consistant with others in the hobby. Seems like it would just be fun to compare different grading skills.

I've bought raw coins from forum members in the past and I got exactly what I expected. As long as they have high quality images, I grade conservatively and purchase based on that.

Yes, I would and have. I paid very strong money to Jared (poptopsrus) for a pair of raw 1967 SMS Kennedy halves, and his assessment of the coins was right on target. One of the best raw coin purchases I've ever made.

Edited to add: You can see one of them in my sig graphic.

Me too. I always expect a return policy, and in turn forum folks usually offer one.

This would probably be a whole different ball game than Ebay. Within this community a return policy is probably mandatory even though it more than likely would not be needed.

Were the coins purchased put up on the Buy Sell Trade Forum or were they offered via PM or Email ? From my experience coins witin your given series are usually obtained through PM or the BST forum. Other stuff is just stumbled across on Ebay or Signature Lines.

Haven't been here long. But from what I've seen from the regular posting members here. I wouldn't have a problem dealing with some of them, if I were buying. Problem is I'm not buying much at the time. Raw coins wouldn't be a problem for me either. The BST Forum has people posting coins for sale over there that I never see post on the U.S. Coin Forum. This would be another issue to me. image

In the case I mentioned above, neither. He posted to show them to the forum without intending to sell them. I pounced. image

I have purchased raw from a member or two. I got what I expected too. From the member(s) whose opinion I respected the grade was acceptable. From the member(s) who I didn't know well, let's just say I got what I expected (probably wouldn't slab).

Since it wasn't a real expensive coin I ate what I perceived as a loss, whether it was a waste of time or actual loss of money.

So, I think you can almost predict what you will probably get based on how the seller communicates on the forum. In other words, you still have to "watch your P's and Q's" just as if you were eBaying or shopping in a coin store.

I have only bought and sold PCGS coins here, but I would buy a raw Merc from any of the Mercateers I have done business with. It is all about honesty and fair play, not to mention Trust.

I have bought raw coins from some people and the transactions have been good. However, when I first started posting here, I bought two raw coins-a Morgan and a Walker from a person who still posts here. The coins were advertised as BU 63. When I got the coins they were AU cleaned! I was very unhappy and he would not accept a return. He said I got what I paid for.

That person is on my blacklist. Every time I see him post coins for sale, I want to puke.

I have not bought from or sold to forum members yet. I would have no problem with doing so. If things work out, great. If things do not work out, then I would not have a follow up with the particular person. I try to approach things from the perspective that people are fair and honest until they demonstrate otherwise.
  • Must forum members are good people. Of course as in any crowd there might be a bad egg or two around. As Russ stated there are some good deals to be had around here as well. I personally love dealing with members here on the board more than places like Ebay, and I will give better deals here than on Ebay as well. Many of the people here (myself included) offer a no questions asked return policy. If you don't like it return it. Last thing I want is a customer that is not happy with his or her purchase. And even though Russ SUCKS, he's still a good guy image

    That's a bummer,coming from a regular image

  • I`ve only bought from a couple members and all was well. A couple raw coins and a ANACS MS64 " Bugs Bunny " 1955 Franklin Half. I wouldn`t heisitate to buy from them again if I see they have something I`m looking for.
  • Another positive vote for Jared. He helped me find a few very inexpensive circulated Morgan dollars. That was nice since I'm sure the coins weren't worth the time he took to find them.

I haven't always had such a pleasant experience with buying coins from board members. A just completed transaction between me and another board member involved two NGC slabbed half dollars that I agreed to buy after seeing them listed on the BS&T board. The images of the coins looked nice, however, when the coins arrived I noticed that one of them wasn't as nice as it appeared in its image. Immediately, I sent a PM to this board member and asked him if I could return one of the coins. I had expected to be able to return the coin without problem even though there was no listed return policy in the BS&T post. Well, I later received a PM from the board member that stated

<< <i>Sorry but no returns on certified coins.
    Thanks for understanding >>

I guess it's my own fault for not finding clearly before hand about a return policy, I just would never treat someone like that. For anyone who would like to know who this is, so that they can avoid having to deal with someone who does not take returns on certified coins, but who does not list that in their threads, please PM me and I will share the identity.

  • I have bought both raw and slabbed coins from many members here, and have not had any trouble. I can only remember a time or two that I did not care for the coin and had no problem with returning it.

    TomB-
Geeze I thought the enhanced pictures guys always allowed returns.
Oh yeah, that's on sleazeBay where they worry about negs.
(Reminds self to ask about return policy next time I deal with somebody.)
