encased worlds fair 1904 IHC

Is there any way to remove the green stuff without turning it pink. And would it even be worth the effort.

acetone that puppy, yes it's worth it. those are actively pursued by collectors.

  • Not too much you can do with that problem. Depends on the state of the verdigris. If it were my coin, I would apply acetone first, then Coin Care or Blue Ribbon. Next I would attempt to remove the debris with a rose bush thorn (do this while viewing the coin under a microscope at 30X or so). Once you remove as much of the debris as possible, be sure to keep the coin coated in Care or a similar protectant. This will help to stabilize the coin.

There are other more radical methods for dealing with verdigris, but I assume that you would not want to open that can of worms.

  • Thanks for your advise . Do I soak it in acetone or just apply and rinse off?

I would gently rub the entire coin with acetone and a Q-Tip (wooden stick, not plastic). Maybe rub a bit harder in the areas of the verdigris. Then rub the coin with Care (Blue Ribbon) and let it soak to loosen the debris and/or verdigris. Next remove the debris with a thorn. It is not a perfect solution, but it's the best that I know off. Good luck.

  • Vet,

I have a 1904 World's Fair IHC also. It is a different variety than yours. The one that I have is shaped like a bell and can been worn as a necklace. The reverse says "Keep me and never go broke." and "I bring good luck. I have had it for 20 years or more. Interesting to see another type, your pocket piece. Thanks for sharing.

    Have a Great Day!

Forget the acetone, it won't help, instead soak it in olive oil for at least a week.

The acetone is only to remove surface contaminants that have not yet turned to verdigris. Trust me. Wipe a Q-Tip soaked with acetone and I guarantee that the Q-Tip will turn green.

The olive oil thing works too. However, I have had better luck with Care (if you can find the real, original Care --- now off of the market) or Blue Ribbon. The help to dissolve or at least soften the debris within the dentils and devices.

Like I said before, this is not a cure, but rather just the best bandage that I know of.

  • I will try both acetone clean , and then soak in olive oil for a weak. Thanks Larry
