Ryan joins the top 4 in Benchland

Hey Ryan, I see you hopped over Rivard to #4 on the Master Set with those 1973 OPC's. I bought one of those from packcollector, too. Very nice, and very low pop. They should be weighted higher than regular Topps! You beat me on #380. He offered it to me as well, and by the time I responded you'd already snapped it up. This is the HR leaders card I got.

  • JR,
He helped with both OPCs that I just added. I'm at #4 (where I've been once before, but slipped) for the time being. Seems like the top 3 spots are just about locked up...for now!! image
If I ever get off my duff and submit, I've got about 20 items to send in - lots of disks, some OPCs and a lot of those stickers/stamps things from the 80's. If nothing else, I could do some serious damage to my completion percentage!
    Look forward to the top!

  • Ryan-

Congrats on regaining the #4 spot. I just received a '69 OPC Bench in the mail today that I will be adding to my set. I won't tell you what the grade is, but if I'm posting about it, you can infer that it's a toughie!

  • Scott,
I'm hoping to submit a 69 of my own. Have not received it yet, but it looked pretty good. I've seen a couple on the bay recently but both were lower conditioned cards (creasing). I'm really hoping that the one I purchased is as nice in person as the scans I saw.

I know this will sound a little like a broken record, but I've gotten several tips (Thanks Lee), several cards (John, Duncan, etc) and plenty of competition (yeah, you all know who you are!) from the people involved in player sets. Hopefully we can all find enough Kahns, Venezuelans, Candy Lids and Deckles to go around!

  • Ryan- Good luck with your 69 OPC submission! As far as having enough of the Kahn's etc. to go around, I doubt that will ever be possible. Working on as many sets as I am, it's hard to fork out the really big bucks to find a high-grade super rare card. There is still plenty of "low-hanging fruit" that I still need for all my sets to keep me busy for quite some time.
  • hey ryan,

    good deal, congrats !!!

so duncan harvey is suppling cards to my competition is he, well ,,,,,,,,,,,, i guess you can`t keep a good thing quiet forever !!

duncan is a super guy, i really mean that.

I got a '69 OPC, you got a '69 OPC, all God's chillun got a '69 OPC. I guess it's not as low-pop as I thought! PSA just gave my crappy one a 4. It's been through the ringer.

After I bought Duncan's '73 OPC #62, my raw one came back graded PSA 8. I was sure it would only get 7, that's why I accepted his offer. So now I have two 8's.

Ryan, I too had a large Bench submission including discs, cards, oddballs, OPCs. Two came back REFUND NO HOLDER AVAILABLE. They were 1971 Topps Tattoo and 1981 Permagraphic credit card. I suspected they wouldn't grade the credit card (hey, had to try), but I thought sure the Tattoo would grade. It would fit in their standard holder with a mylar sleeve to keep it from sliding around. It was a Topps product, so why not grade it?
  • John,
Just peeked at the "standings" and you've pulled into 2nd place! That's what happens when you get some real numbers behind that completion %. Very cool.
Too bad about the 69 OPC. I still don't have mine in hand so I'm holding off on my regular card submission. My disks and such are probably ready to go-soon, very soon.
I meant to ask you about that permagraphics card-I've got one (I think we all do) and wasn't sure if it was gradeable. Seems to me it would fit...mylar baggie in a standard holder. I don't believe it is going to get damaged from floating around.
Funny, I picked up a Beckett 9.5 1977 Chilly Willee, get it in my hands and check out the back. Seems to be a big divot on the upper back edge. Guess the back doesn't come into play when assigning a gem grade. Nice.

  • Ryan- Can I get your e-mail address? BJ has asked us to review the Bench Master Set card weights, and I didn't have your e-mail address to forward you her message. Thanks alot!

Well, I suspect they won't grade the Permagraphics credit card 'cause it's plastic and therefore not subject to much wear and tear like card stock. So any point in grading? But seems like they wouldn't disguise that with NO HOLDER AVAILABLE. That's just silly.

What the heck's the reason for rejecting the '71 Topps Tattoo? That will fit in any holder and is VERY vulnerable to wear and tear. It's fragile as all heck, much more than a card.

Chilly Willee discs for Bench seem to be pretty scarce in graded form. Only 3 PSA 9's or 10's and I seem to have the only PSA 8. "Lowest graded!"
