Which Coin World Advertisers Are OK??

I just started receiving my subscription of Coin World and would like to get an idea which of the advertisers are worth putting my glasses on and taking a closer look at? image

Thanks,
Ron

While most of my experience with such publications is limited to Numismatic News rather than Coin World, I usually got the best bargains in the back, buried in the small classifieds.

While the full-page and double-page advertisers can be perfectly all right, sometimes you have to ask yourself how they can afford such an expensive ad. "Gem BU" raw, sight-unseen coins from such sellers have a tendency to be sliders, in my personal experience. Like I said, you can't paint 'em all with the same brush, but I'll take the little guys over the big guys most of the time.

It's worked the same way for me in buying used cars. Seems like the better deals are from the owners selling in the classifieds. I've only bought a car from a dealer once or twice. The best ones I've bought weren't even in the paper- they were word of mouth finds from friends at work and such.

These forums are a good place for word of mouth, and a good place to find what you're after.

If you see something that looks like a good deal in a big Coin World ad, then fine, go for it. It could be. But the usual "if it looks to good to be true, it probably is" rule applies.

I'd rather buy here on the BST forum (from folks I trust), or on eBay or the Internet, where I can actually see a picture of what I'm getting first. Buying sight-unseen from the papers and magazines just doesn't hold any appeal for me anymore.

  • You didn't say what you collect. For Morgans and other 19th century silver you can start with Rare Coins of New Hampshire, or Legend Numismatics (www.Legendcoins.com), or Gus Tiso Inc. In general, in big ads that don't specify a specific coin ( or don't sell PCGS/NGC coins) there is what may seem to be bargins, but commonly their coins are not. Lots of people who post here sell nice coins to get you started too. Take the ads and go to a show to meet the dealers.

Miller's Mint Ltd. are good folks.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?
  • Jack Beymer is one to take a closer look at.

His prices are higher than most dealers, but he grades conservatively and offers very high quality coins. I have no regrets from what I have bought from him, and I still consider a couple of them to have been bargains.

So far mostly modern Washingtons & Kennedy's and a few Morgans & Peace Dollars but need to find smothing new one of these days.
  • RonMan----For Washingtons, I've got a few nicely toned original ones from L and C, and Rare Coins of NH. Perhaps stick to PCGS in the Washingtons until you're an expert because there can be as much as a 5X price variance between PCGS and NGC in the series and you shouldn't pay the same price for the same grade. All the above are good for Morgans. Perhaps Pinnacle for Walkers? Have you looked at all the coins up for auction at www.heritagecoin.com from major collections coming to market? You can bid online right against the dealers but have to rely on their coin images (not bad actually).
