I sent the Nero in, more to be protected in a slab than to care about the grade. I do have some ancients that warrant being in protective holders (and some that don't), and the slab provides a relative guarantee of authenticity, protection, and an independent opinion of wear.
Hint #1 - it didn't grade as high as I thought it would.
I compared the Nero to my Tiberius aureus graded ICG VF-30 and thought it had a little more detail and less wear, but obviously it is a different design and it was only my opinion. I thought it was an honest VF-35 with a shot at EF-40. The price guide takes a huge jump in EF-40 from $3k to $10k so I was hoping it would get the EF grade. (I am aware of the differences in European/US grading standards)
It Graded: VF-30
I was disappointed. The coin looks great IMO but looks much better than my other VF-30 aureus. Must be Nero's revenge for the fire...
Based on the scan and comparing it to several of my ICG graded ancients, I initially thought it would grade between a VF 30 and a VF 35. A very nice coin! What other ICG graded ancients do you have?
My other ICG graded ancients were originally pictured in the August edition of the Celator - mostly Greek.
I have a couple on Alexander's with toning that takes my breath away. Also, a nice Lysimachos, a Punic horse Tet, mostly Ex:auction stuff, etc.
Only the two Roman aureus, and a Titus Restoration Augustus (bought already slabbed).
Overall, I've been indifferent to the ICG slab of my ancients. I am happy that some of them do make it into the slab (AE's are difficult - my Nero dupondius is fantastic, and I wasn't aware of the enviro-damage on the reverse). But, ICG seems to be pretty hard on the grades. I have a few that I thought were near MS or atleast AU-58,, many got AU-50 grades and one got an EF-45. I do like the coins better in the holder,, they're easier to handle and give the coins more 'respectability' as they are presented better than a 2x2 flip.

Like yourself, I also like the coins in ICG slabs; but I try to reserve that for the higher graded coins. I have a few Alexander the Great's that are graded ICG 60 and above and they are just amazing to look at in the slab.
I'm mainly interested in the coinage of Julius Caesar. I'm getting close to completing the entire run of his coins and when that happens, I'm not sure what I will chase after that.

A FEW DAYS!!!! With the attention span of most of the members here, me included, in a few days we'll forget what or who Nero is.

Nice piece, whatever the grade!
<< <i>PS- looks like he had a goiter on the back of his neck!
As soon as I saw the picture, I thought "looks like he has goiter" and then I scrolled down and saw your post.
I won't even hazard a guess. I can't grade ancients ...
But it IS a beautiful coin

Very nice though!!!!
OK - two days (just to give everyone time who wants a guess).
Long time luker - thanks for the Welcome.
I actually thought Nero was a hamster and that was one pack of 'chewed nuts' on the back of his neck.
Chewed Nuts <---- did I say that?

Nice excellent coin anyway.
Yes that's a goiter on Nero.

Chicolini: Mint? No, no, I no like a mint. Uh - what other flavor you got?
It Graded: VF-30

But I was tryin' to guess the ICG grade.
Great coin, goiter and all.
I'd love to have an aureus.

I'd say F-VF but that would be by Scandinavian standard. So probably VF by US standard. Pretty coin!

Just don't try to get me collecting that old stuff, I got too many directions to go in now as it is.
