Kinda neat how the reverse is a bit off-center.

  • Yes, the reverse die is misaligned. It is not off-center.
  • Is that an authentic one?
What are they worth nowadays? I didn't see any price guides off hand when I took a quick look around.

If I knew enough about Fugio cents to determine if it was real or not, I'd purchase it.
  • The fugio has a great deal of history associated with it. Including the connection to Ben Franklin. Even in it's poor condition, I would expect this coin to go for $150-200.

  • Fugios are well worth owning-- they're our first officially authorized 'United States' coin. Also our first "large cent."

  • Looks like a 13-X (R.3), but it's just too far gone to tell from his poor images. I am not sure if the break on the obverse is a break or damage. I am leaning towards damage. It's a bit too expensive for a coin in that condition. Still, the Fugio cent is one of my favorite coins (I own over 20 examples).

    it's a $100 coin imo.

  • At his BIN price it's too expensive but right now it's still just at $10 which is too cheap. I think Dork is too low at $100. Granddad is probably about right at $150 or so.

And yes it is most likely real. About 99+% certainty

Okily Dokily then, let's find out the reserve.

  • Absolutely the real thing.

Ended at $114.50, about what I expected it to end at. Think I should bother shipping it with my next batch to ANACS?

  • I should have kept a closer eye on it. Too cheap. I'd have paid more but I know you were interested in it and had bid on it so I wouldn't have bid you up. I'd like to get one in that kind of condition at that price. The one I have was cheaper but it's ugly to.

  • Douglas,

I too wanted to bid on this piece, but I don't like to compete with forum members. Either I am too nice or too stupid. The reason that I wanted it is because I think that it may be a better variety. Please post good images of obv and rev when you get it. I am most curious about the large die break on the obverse. That does not exist on any variety that I know of. It may very well be a planchet lamination or post striking damage. His images are too crappy. I was a rip at $114. Congrats.

PS - Maybe I should get an anonymous eBay account so that I can start scooping these things up? image

I've been looking for an excuse to pick up a good fixed 105mm macro lens for my D100, I'll just have to bite the bullet and pick one up so that perhaps someone here can attribute the variety of this cent. I'll post pictures as soon as I find a lens image. I'm just happy that I finally found an affordable Fugio that isn't worn completely smooth for my type set.

  • .....even a scan would be better than the pics on eBay. I just need to see some areas enlarged (i.e. lower obv motto, "fugio" and date). The reverse looks to be pretty much gone, but perhaps you can answer this for me once you receive the coin: is it "STATES UNITED" or "UNITED STATES"?

Agreed. One thing I find very annoying is that everyone wants to take pictures of the coins at an angle instead of straight on. On some things tat's ok, but on pieces that are commonly collected by die variety it makes it difficult or impossible to attribute or confirm the variety since you can't see relationships between elements accurately.

(I don't think that is a die crack at the bottom, it looks more like a lamination to me.)
