Saying hi :-) Favorite dealers, nice coin!

Hope you don't mind if I de-lurk myself here! I've been cruising this forum silently for awhile. I can't begin to tell you how much I've learned from your posts, how much I enjoy the give and take. I had a bit of free time today so I thought I would make my presence known image As some of you already know, I'm into numismatics after an absence of about twenty years, during which time I was busy with work, travel, family, fun. Back in the mid 80's I built one of the nicer full step Jeff collections (never completed). Maybe not as nice as Bern Nagengast, or some of the NJ guys, but probably top 10 for that time. Sue and Rich Sisti, and PAK auctions, were my best coin sources. I was busy building when PCGS was just getting started, when registry sets were only a future dream. I sold at auction, the Sisti's 'Paducah Sale' was my collection, and dived into other things. How amazed I've been, looking at Coin World during the past year, to see where prices are today! I have no doubt numismatics has been the best over all "investment," during my lifetime. I'm speaking as one who has made a small amount of money in real estate, stocks, options, gold. Someone who threw everything he had into gold at $140/oz, when it became legal to own gold again (thanks President Ford!), someone who once thought paying $170/oz was way too much for gold. It's clear to me today, numismatics has topped every financial success I've had, anything I've seen, other than friends who have won major money in a USA lottery (x2 - 100K winners and x1 - IL lottery 6/6 winner). I'm a collector now, more than an investor, but, playing it smart, it is only prudent to look at the $$$ side of things.

A few comments on recent forum discussions..... favorite dealers :

I haven't returned to the thread recently but I remember, at the time I last saw it, no one had mentioned David Lawrence Rare Coins. DLRC is high on my list. I think, for online, they are the best. Their pics are nice enough that you know, almost every time, whether or not the coin is right for you. All my transactions with DLRC have been 100% problem free. I've bid on some of their online auctions. I've let high bids go sitting like ducks and have almost always won the lot way below my high. I do think they're honest in their auctions. It seems to me that not many collectors are bidding DLRC web auctions, at this time. I've won several nice coins, with no competition, at what I feel are very decent prices. DLRC is definitely nice.

Dealers, other than DLRC, I like :

Joe O'Connor - thanks, Joe!
Pinnacle Rarities - Scott Schechter, thanks Scott!
David Hall Rare Coins - thanks, Van, older than me by only a few days!
Anaconda Rare Coins - yes, Adrian is a 100% great guy to deal with. Seriously!
Carl Wohlforth - Carl's Coins, terrific numismatist, very nice person image
Albanese Rare Coins - Dave, thanks! I am SO glad AC was in London that week!!
Rare Coins of New Hampshire - Paul Battaglia, helpful at all times!

And, FWIW, not mentioning someone here doesn't mean I don't like them or respect them. There are several people I would like to do business with, when time and money are right.

Favorite coins :

It's always changing but here is one I bought a few weeks ago that I really enjoy and treasure. I'm psyched every time I get to see it. The earth colors on this large cent are rich and deep. It's actually much nicer in hand, than the very decent pic. Maybe, because I live surrounded by acres of farmer's fields, this coin resonates with the very best of my Western Kentucky environment. Is this jpg file maybe too large for the forum? I don't want to draw complaints from dial up modems in TX! image I'll try to shrink down next time I post a pic.

That's all for now. All best numismatic wishes, to everyone here!

Kentucky J

  • Welcome KentuckyJ! I'm very pleased you decided to "de-lurk" image
  • I've had great luck with DLRC and will continue to do business with them. I'm glad to see you also have dealt with Dave at Albanese. DLRC brings up a two different feelings among collectors. Love em or hate em. They've gone out of there way for me many times, even to ensure I have a Hotel room for the II Richmond Auction and Baltimore Show. I've bought from Adrian and am very pleased with what I bought.

    Anyway, welcome.

Jerry, as I said, I've had nothing but good dealings with DLRC. I didn't know they were in the love/hate category!

Murphy, no. I saw that season of Survivor and enjoyed it but I'm no relation to Joe.

  • After 20 years away welcome back. I noticed you went right to the top dealers without getting sidetracked by "bargins". That makes things a lot more funimage

  • Welcome to the boards and I love that Large Cent. It`s very tough to find a better one IMHO. I`ve had good experiences with David Lawrence Rare Coins too. Same with Rare Coins of New Hampshire as well. The others on your list I haven`t tried but, heard good words about them from other forum members too.

More thanks for your kind welcomes to the board image

I'm also very fond of a nice Bust Dollar that entered the collection about 10 days ago. I'll post a pic when I have time to size into something easier on the bandwidth.

Like I said in another thread, I had little interest in old copper until I saw this 1837 NGC MS66 BN. I don't know the PCGS stats. I'm told there are 4 graded by NGC at this level, with none higher. I feel real lucky to have it as a type.

    All best weekends to you!
