Type I is the normal pre WWII composition and type II is the silver composition! Type II also has the large mintmark.

    Hi,
the Type 1 composition was Copper - 75% Nickel - 25%. Type 2 nickels were Copper - 56% Silver - 35% Manganese - 9%; the nickel was needed for the war effort. Also, the Type 2 had the large mintmarks - the large mintmark was used on both business strike and Proof wartime composition nickels until 1945.

    Best,

  • I've always liked the Proof 1942 Type 2 Jefferson nickels! That is the first coin to use a P for the Philadelphia mint mark, coins before that had no MM if they were made in Phily. That looks like a good coin, the jaw looks good and I can't see any hairlines from here. image

    hey Billy

these are hard to find non-brilliant. there looks to be some strike weakness at the jaw and in the middle of the steps. that probably accounted for the lower grade.

Nice nickel. Those older proof Nickels are hard to find. I recently started looking for them myself, only I'm looking for them raw. So far all I've found that were affordable were the 42 type I and the 42 type II.
