Medium old collection

I am helping an US estate with some stuff stored in Norway. It is some uncirculated US one dollars (1901, 1902, 1904, 1921-1924 etc.) There is also a couple Bank bags (Somerset Banking Co. $500 and Federal Reserve Bank, Minn., MN), some complete uc sets from the early sixties, some complete sets (circulated) of halfs (1916-1948), quarters, dimes and nickels.

This collection has not been looked through since 1981 I guess.

What do you think is the best way to get an estimated value on this collection?

And if this collection should be sold, is eBay the right place?

The best approach is to buy 2 books to get a general idea. One is the ANA Grading Standards book (or Photograde). The other is the Red Book. (Guide to US Coins with prices). It's a rough guess of retail amount, not the wholesale amount or what the coins might actually sell for. Also, posting pictures here can be helpful.

  • Fairdale, the collection should be appraised by a knowledgeable numismatist who will have an opportunity to view the coins in person. The 2 bank bags are of particular interest, especially if they are sealed bags. Here are a few basic rules to follow when obtaining an appraisal for your particular collection:

    1) Since you are going to sell the collection, go ahead and obtain at least 3 competitive, written offers for the collection. The true value is what someone is willing to pay you for the coins. Take the highest offer and/or the one with the best terms (certified immediate funds).

2)You will have some trouble obtaining 3 bids since you are in Norway. Since you mentioned eBay, I assume that you have photography/imaging capabilities. You could build a nice portfolio of images of the coins and, together with a written inventory, obtain 3 or 4 competitive bids via the internet.

    3) I do not recommend eBay due to the fact that you are in Norway and the strongest buyers of U.S. material are located in America. You will instantly eliminate most potential buyers as they would be worried about sending funds to another country. Most Americans are skeptial these days about international buying/selling (a lot of scams out there).

    4) The one exception to not selling the collection on eBay is if you consign it to a reputable U.S. company with an eBay account.

    5) Finally, you could post a few images of the collection on this forum. That would help us to narrow down the possibilities for you.

    Hope that helps!
