eBay Seller refunds my money and says coin isn't worth that much

I see an 1878 Morgan Dollar listed and take a look.

There is no mention of a mint mark in the title, so I'm happy to see it's a CC image and set-up a snipe.
The reverse also looks PL and the obverse maybe - and it's a nice clean coin maybe MS65.

Then he sends me a refund with this note

Oh well, I'm still out $2.25 to Auction Sniper, but it's better than getting an 1878-S instead. image

  • Probably a good chance that it really was a CC - He says - I'm told that this coin is worth $1000 - but it's not likely he'll send you the coin that he posted an image of in that auction - you might just want to ask him where he got the photo for the coin that he was auctioning - OTOH, maybe you're not entitlted to an 1878-CC if he made a mistake in his listing image

It turns out there were no buyers at $499 for that coin.

I found where he lifted the picture from

From the eBay auction it appears the seller doesn't understand mintmarks. He found a 1878 Morgan selling for $495 on eBay and assume all 1878's were worth that amount. He then lifted the picture and asked the same price. Think you would really be POed if he sent you a 78-S.

  • What's with the I'm going to "START" refunding your money? Did he think it was a loan?

Hmmm...since they use the same pictures & text reckon 5181089 & marlampope are the same person?
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

There is a bid retraction on 10/20 saying the seller changed the description so who knows what was there originally.

Since he didn't rip me off, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I guess he was just a chucklehead thinking an 1878 Morgan is a generic item.
