I often see a coin which is worse (sometimes much worse) than one that I own, but is somehow residing in a higher holder than mine.

Which gets me thinking that maybe I should buy this coin, tie up a lot of money for a long period of time, eventually carry it to a show with me, lay it out in front of PCGS side by side with my coin and then they can say 'Hey! You're right!! Your coin is undergraded, we're sorry about the mistake, would you like us to bump it one or two notches?'.

PCGS does like comparison coins. If you can lay 3-4 inferior examples at a grade level [or 3-4 equivalent examples at the next level up] in front of them for comparison, your chances go way up of getting what you want.

Cool. If they dropped the other coins down, they would have to reimburse you for the grade difference on each one.

YES!! I have a coin that is "head and shoulders" above any comparably graded coin of the mintage!! Problem is that the coin in the grade is about $14K, so assembling a few of them is both costly AND near impossible!! So I just keep sending mine in every 3 months and helping poor David make money!
