Help me grade my Franklin Halves....FBL????

Just picked these up at the flea Market and I picked the best 3 the seller had. I initially graded them each MS64 on site, but wanted some opinions from board members. I already checked out large scans on Heritage of PCGS MS64 and MS65 pieces and I was surprised at all of the scratches and reed marks allowed on both the 64's and 65's. I think at least 1 of these might go an MS65, but I will defer to the experts here........

I know it's tough to grade from scans or make out Full Bell Lines, but any help would be appreciated image

I am not the best with capturing coin images, but these look to be fairly accurate, and hopefully large enough for you to grade from.

The lower band of lines on the top and bottom pic have a glare covering the lines. I don't think the second one would go FBL--too much chatter.

  • Too much glare on the bottom set of lines. The bottom set of lines is what you use to determine FBL or not. Reposition your lighting.
  • I'll see if I can rescan just the bottom of all 3 and post them here....thanks for the quick responses.......any grade guesses yet?

The 57 might FBL but the chatter marks on all are going to mean some pretty low grades 61 or 62. Unless they are better that what I think i'm seeing.
  • I just can't seem to capture the lines at the bottom without all of the glare croping up image

As I mentioned before...I went on Heritage and saw large scans of MS64's that clearly reflected all of the chatter and more in some cases than my coins display. Plus these are not the first Franklin's I've owned, but as I previously acknowledged...it's tough to grade from a scan because all of the dust and hairs on the 2X2's look like marks on the coin surface.

As for the FBL designation...I don't know if any of these coins make it, I just don't have enough experience to know what the grading companies are looking for. Since these are staying raw, it doesn't really mater, but I was hoping you folks could pick up the lines on the scan well enought to tell. image
  • I'd say you have a couple of nice MS63 coins there. The 1957 D is the only one I think has the FBL's.

In my opinion the 57-D has a shot at FBL.

  • PCGS looks for the 2 bottom lines to be full. They also don't like lots of hits in the fields.

Here's a pic that I shot of my '56 that shows FBL nicely.

PCGS like the bell lines to come right up to the crack in the bell and full on the ends of the bell.

"Uninterupted" is the term they use in their grading book.

    The 1963 might go 63.
    Can't see the 57 or 58 in a 63 holder.
    To many hits IMHO.
