Buying cent rolls on eBay

dtkk49adtkk49a Posts: 2,489 ✭✭✭
I am thinking about buying some BU cent rolls on eBay. Any suggestions as to how do I go about doing this ? I don't want to get ripped off. What do I look for ? Shotgun rolls or tubes ? Are there certain dealers I should buy from ? Stay away from ?

I am looking for a nice 54 roll as well as some in the 60's

I saw your post but have never bought rolls on eBay, so I didn't have anything intelligent to say. image

i would say stick with a recommended seller and pray for the best. Go to a coin show instead or local shop.....i like cert stuff on the bay, thats bout it....occassional raw toned coin, but never for big $$

It’s a crap shoot. Most rolls HAVE been opened very carefully and searched and made to look like they had not. We have seen rolls with this claim in modern wrappers, and even with banks wrappers that did not exist the time the cent was minted. It’s just like the phrase "Unsearched Wheat cents" yeah, right. If you’re not after truly unopened rolls, than go ahead. Some will have photos of the roll dumped which helps a bit.

The time for buying rolls is past. You can assume that everything has been picked over in one way or another. In the case of original shotgun rolls the seller, if he has multiple rolls, will open one and check it for quality. If there are problems evident such as carbon spotting, weak strike, etc., the remaining rolls will be put up for sale, unopened. If the roll he checks is nice and contains pieces that will slab at high grades he will open the rest of the rolls and cherry-pick them. Many original rolls have been very poorly stored (kept in damp basements for decades) so there is a lot of bad material out there waiting to be dumped on unsuspecting buyers.
    All glory is fleeting.

I did buy a roll of 54 p lincolns off Ebay. It's pot luck in what you get. I sent the best ones to Anacs and Pcgs. Anacs 66rd and Pcgs 65rd.
The Anacs is going in with some NGC Franklins hoping it will cross.
