General Question regarding 1899 Morgan.

First of all thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I was wondering if anybody has a good explanation on why the 1899 Morgan is so undervalued with it's low mintage. If you compare it to the rest of the series there are only a handful of Morgans with lower mintages(4) not including CC. My only reasoning is that the other 1899's (0&S) have higher mintages, which seems like the most logical reason. So with that do you think the 1899 is a sleeper coin thats's just under appreciated or is just generally ignored because of the higher mintages for the O and S. Any insight would be welcomed. This has driven me nuts when I see a ....EG: 1896s with a mintage of 5million valued at 50 dollars and the 1899 with a mintage of 330,846 valued at 45 dollars.image

The likely explanation is that most of those 330,000 coins survived either in mint state or by being released into circulation tho circulated coins are scarce; kinda like the 85-cc and 03-o.
The other possible explanation is that the mintage figures may be in error.

There is significant doubt as to the accuracy of the mintage figure.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • On Morgans, the meltings due to the Pitman Act and the number of mass releases by banks and/or GSA in the 1950's/70's are GENERALLY the most important things. The data is old, but I go by the charts published in Encylopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars (Van Allen, L and Mallis, A.G., 1991) as shown on pages 14 through 19. FYI the 1899 in Mint State 63- better was rarity number 48 of 105 listed ( those >97 are overdate varities, etc.). Using the "VAM" book plus PCGS-NGC population reports, I think you'll find some sleepers out there. Sometimes there are "sleepers" written about in Coinworld etc. using mint figures, and frankly I find some stories downright misleadind on Morgans. Others are on the money like some that picked the low grade 1893-S unaltered, AU 1894, 1893-0, 1895-O, 1892S AU, etc. Good luck! image
