What's the Best Roethlisberger RC?

I'm not much into newer cards but I thought I'd pick up a few Roethlisberger cards being that I'm a big Steeler fan and he's the first quality QB we've had since Bradshaw. He's playing lights out so far. Any recommendations for which cards to pick up? There doesn't seem to be many varieties on eBay yet.

Probably either Goudey or Red Man. You can never go wrong with they Ramly set though.
  • Right now, I would say The Playoff absolute spectrum /75,and skybox LE /35. Skybox LE is very underrated. There will be other products later in the year. He looks like a solid QB for years to come.

    John-

SP Authentic should be out soon...that is the brand name that has some hobby "legs" in regards to football rookies. The only issue is that you are probably going to be paying top dollar to Ben's cards right now.

His hottest cards HAVE to be fleer hot prospects AU RC /150 and the rookie exclusives from SP GU...I bet if
you check ebay they probably are selling for twice book.

Demand FAR exceeds supply here. If you are buying now, you will have to pay top dollar...is he that good?

Huh? I typed his name into Ebay just now and got 1470 hits. How many varieties do you want?

That said, SP Authentic (which isn't out yet) and Ultimate Collection will likely be his top RCs.

Usually you are right with SPA, but how are they going to top a patch auto numbered to just 150? Can
contenders match that too? Fleer has set the bar high.

Or SPx or Playoff Contenders or Leaf Certified Somethings or Exquisite Football or something not out yet.

If you're a fan not a speculator, I'd suggest a nice variety of basic cards. Topps, UD, Fleer Tradition, etc. You certainly could go and spend $1000 or more on a single card, but I think that's a bit high for a guy in the league 5 weeks. For investment, he's already the top rookie in the market, so his RCs are peaking. After the season is over and the hype dies down and another QB is anointed the future whoever in the draft, his top cards will probably be somewhat more affordable.

Playoff Contenders or SP Authentic will be the ones to get - neither is out yet, and each should most likely be a few hundred bucks per card right out of the gate.

And, Ultimate Collection football should have a desirable auto rookie of his as well.

The card to get is his 2004 Topps Chrome Chrome Rookie Refractor numbered to just 150.
Beautiful card - hard to find - selling well above book right now.

If you are going to invest in modern football cards, rookie QB's is the way to go.

  • Gemmint, I pulled his Topps Chrome Black Border Friday. No book yet, but there have been a few on eBay. Went from $100-a not yet auction of a bgs 9.5 at $400 currently...

Thanks for all the recommendations. I'm more into it as a spectator rather than a speculator. I'm a big Steeler fan and he's the most exciting rookie QB in team history (Bradshaw stunk as a rookie). I think he will be a great QB but I'm not able to bring myself to spending hundreds of dollars on a new card. I'll probably pick a few of his midrange cards that are not produced in the gazillions yet aren't hand numbered "rarities". There seems to be a wide selection available, so I'm sure one of them will be what I'm looking for.

Yeah, if he beats New England, his cards will be the rage !

Gemint - If you are going to buy his rookie card, don't buy a couple if midrange rookie cards. Spend the money and get one good one.

    Good Point!

2 or 3 weeks of sub-par performances and his cards will drop. My suggestion would be to wait till after the season to buy his cards....right when baseball season is starting.

I'm going to my LCS in a little bit, haven't been there in a month or so. I started poking around on ebay and came across the Roethlisberger auctions and then I dug up this thread. I can't believe how high he is. Base Topps $12.50. Almost anything autographed is at least a hundred dollars. I usually only collect one or two football sets each year, but this puts me in a lottery-testing, pack-ripping mood. Must resist...

If Ben pulls a "Tom Brady" and takes his team all the way, look for some of his cards to skyrocket. The only difference is that Tom Brady doesn't have allot of rookie cards, while Ben already seems to have a 1000. So you need to pick and choose and get the right cards.

I'm not buying his cards, but the idea would be to open packs to get his cards to resell. Of course, the odds are too long to do that for the amount of money I spend on packs ($20 a month), but if I was a bigger football collector I'd be going wild.
