I could use a little help please ...

The time has finally come to get rid of my fathers' coin collection. Problem is, I buy and sell sportscards and memorabilia and don't know anything about coins. Although I am not new to the CU forums, I am new to the Coin Forum. This is a small collection that consists of 34 Morgan Head dollars ranging in years from 1887 to 1935. There's also a 1947 Eisenhower Dollar, a few Buffalo Nickels and mid 1800's dimes, half dimes, and pennies. I also see a Canadian Nickel from 1881 as well as some other coin from 1881 (it looks German from the writing). Any help on how I can sell these coins or value would be appreciated. LMK if scans are needed too! image

  • What's your asking price - I'm assuming that they are loose coins, (not graded).

You meant 1974 Eishenhower dollar. Right? All the coins values depend on their condition and if they also have any mint marks.

  • Could we possibly get any pictures of this collection?
  • If you have a 1947 Ike, you can prolly retire after the sale.... I would assume this is a '74, right?

Do you buy and sell on eBay? If you do, you have the perfect solution. Or the B,S,&T coin forum is a good place also. If you could give us some pictures or scans, we can give you a ballpark of what they are worth. Please don't clean themimage

That last date is extremely rare.

  • My guess without seeing the coins is that the collection is probably worth under $1K, so I wouldn't waste time certifying anything. I would sell them on either eBay or BST - Coins forum. Take an obverse and reverse pic of each, and write up a short description. Get a coin expert to help you write up the descriptions, and ask him/her if you have any scarce dates or very high grades. You may want to lump together several of those lesser value coins that are similar, like the Buffalo nickels.

Check out a Vanguard Roth IRA.
  • Use the same basic principals that you would use if you found a hoard of sports memorabilia. Buy an inexpensive price guide (the Redbook) to get a general idea of the value of the coins. Then sell them to a dealer if you want to sell quickly (and for less) or directly yourself through eBay.

Again, not much different from sports cards or any other collectible.

  • Yes, these are loose, not graded. Here are a couple of scans of the better looking Morgan's. This is a little more than half. Sorry about the Ike. It is a 1972. I don't know what I was looking at before.

The majority are from 1922 & 1923. The rest are about the same with about four a little worse (and a few that are alot worse). One has a hole like someone tried to make it a necklace.

    Thanks for everyone's input! image

  • We could help more if you'd turn you Liberty head Morgan (1878-1921) Dollars over and look for a mint mark. It's right below the eagle and above the D and O of "DOLLAR" on reverse. If you can image any of these together with the date, it gives a good place to start looking for unlikely rarities. Also look for 1894 with no mint mark. On your Liberty head Peace Dollars (1921-1935) that seem circulated just look for any 1928 without a mint mark (ie. no S) on the reverse just between the O and N of ONE and eagle's wing tips. Other than that one (1928, no mark), the Peace Dollars are common in circulated (opps-look for 1921 PEACE also, NOT Morgan). The rest are very common and $6.50 to $7.50. Ebays OK and so's this forum. I've sold common coins to R. Howard Rare Coin GAllery (419) 352 9199 who posts buy prices in back of Coin World just because he's fair and quick. Depends what your time's worth.

    Just sell it on eBay.
