Interesting GAI pack seller

Link to Ryan pack

Here's an 83 Fleer Ryan cello, graded by GAI with the same Ryan card on the top and bottom of the pack. I clicked on it, and towards the bottom of the page where it shows the seller's other auctions, he has a TON of the exact same thing - Palmerio rookies, Gwynn rookies, you name it he has the ame card in a pack twice and authenticated by GAI. What are the odds of this being possible? Here's a sampling of what he's offering:

(10) GAI 9.5 1987 Topps Cello's BARRY BONDS RC on Top

GAI 10 1983 Fleer Cello TONY GWYNN RC Front & Back

GAI 10 PERFECT 1987 Topps Cello BARRY BONDS RC on Top

GAI 9.5 1983 Fleer Cello TONY GWYNN RC on Top & on Back

GAI 9.5 1982 Topps Cello w/NOLAN RYAN on Top & on Back

GAI 9.5 1987 TOPPS CELLO Rafael Palmiero front & back

GAI 9 1987 Topps Cello w/BARRY BONDS Top & Back

GAI 9 1983 Topps Cello w/NOLAN RYAN on Top & on Back

GAI 9.5 1983 Fleer Cello w/Henderson Front & Brett Back

GAI 8.5 1987 Topps Cello CLEMENTE & BONDS RC

It just doesn't add up to me. Also makes me wonder about GAI's authority to authenticate packs if this guy can slip cellos past them. Any thoughts or am I just being an ass?

Also he has a ton of Hello Kitty DVD's. Make sure to pick up a few of those.

A while back on eBay seller had a raw '83 Topps football cello with Marcus Allen RC's on both front and back. I had never seen one so I bid, but alas, was outbid. The next week, the same seller had ANOTHER for sale, which I won. I asked him how he could have two of these when I had never seen one before, and he said he used to break case upon case of cellos for bulk set making back in the day, and would save any with interesting back+front cards showing. The pack looked fine to me, but I have not sent it to GAI. This might be the same guy, or someone who did the same.

Back in the 80s I used to just go through cello after cello in stores looking for ones with stars on top. Not that hard if you own a store to just take all of the ones that this guy has collected. If they were all from the same set and the same year, I'd be concerned, but it looks legit.

Nevermind....just saw that it was FRONT & BACK. Just adds to GAIs legacy of "willing to grade anything for the almighty dollar." I was at a show and tried to get a Ripken shhetcut rookie in a BGS holder crossed over to GAI. They rejceted it on account it was sheet cut. I almost felt like grabbing a pair of scissors and trimming it in front of them, because as well know THEY GRADE TRIMMED CARDS!

  • This is not unheard of, same card on front and back, on modern especially 1980s if someone has been buying items like this for years it would not be unheard of to have a quantity of material like that. Just go through some SCD's from the late 1980s early 1990s and you will see loads of racks and cellos with stars or multiple or repeat stars on them. As for the whole GAI grading trimmed cards i have seen tons of cut cards in sgc bgs and psa holders as well as gai i think they all make mistakes however ill trust mike baker over the people grading at psa do any of you even know who grades there anymore and dave forman new owner of sgc is probably actually the best at any company as far as knowledge though i dont know if he gets envolved in the grading end of the business. As for bgs anyone investing money in their cards ought to know that many of the high grade bgs cards are trimmed i know a number of dealers that brag of how they get these big dollar modern cards trim them up and get BGS 9.5 and 10s.imageimageimageimageimage

Is the problem with the Fleer pack the fact that Fleer usually had perfect collation back then? Or was that only with wax packs. I remember needing only a box and a half to finish Fleer sets and buying box after box after box of Topps.

in the new goodwin auction there is a similiar item, lot # 202. i just got my catalog today. 1973 topps baseball gai 6 same guy on top and bottom. lerrin lagrow.
as for the 1983 fleer packs-i dont believe it. i opened tons of them back in the day and sure i saved some nice packs with stars and gwynn showing but i never found one of these.
also, i have opened gai graded packs and sometimes i didnt think they were really unopened.
i wouldnt spend too much on any of these gai graded packs with a premium b/c there's a ryan or gwynn showing.
