Trade Dollar help

I am looking at picking up a Trade dollar. I saw one on Ebay, BUT, with all the fakes I am not so sure. Is there any site that I may look at that might give some tips at Identifying a fake?

Any pointers would be helpful

Thanks.

ttt - because I am interested in this also.

A friend of mine recently gave me a Trade Dollar. I suspect it is fake, as why would someone give a real one away. I should take a picture of it, and post it, so someone can tell me what to look for.

DO NOT buy a raw trade dollar except from a well established reputable seller who you can go back and get your money from if they messed up. I strongly recommend buying coins certified as genuine by one of the top 3 services.

I agree with TDN. If you MUST buy a Trade Dollar off of eBay, look at the following:

    1) Is the coin porous or does it have good luster? Does the coin have a casted look?
    2) Does the year and mintmark make sense with the Type I and Type II combinations. Example, a Type I/I coin would never be seen on a coin 1877 or later.
    3) There are many subtle artifacts that exist with a coin that can be used but unless you know them well, just buy pre-graded coins. You'll save a lot of money.
