Steinbrenner's next move?

Will George fire Torre? Get rid of Kevin Brown,Tom Gordon? It will be interesting to see what happens in the next couple of weeks.

  • I think that he will make Kevin Brown the scapegoat (which is actually accurate).

Torre is not going to get fired. Torre is not Billy Martin and Steinbrenner, although still sometimes a lunatic, isn't as big of a lunatic as he used to be when Martin was managing. But we all know that George will surely be spending a lot more of his money during the off season.
  • Torre, Jeter, A-scrod, Cashman and Gordan will stay but everyones esle watch out! Its time to gut this ageing team.

I think he will utter the phrase -

"Hello, Mr. Beltran? George S calling...."

Out - Lofton, Quantrill, Sierra, Gordon, Clark and Brown if they can be moved.

Coaches - The staff should stay, unless Randolf leaves.

In - 2 premier pitchers, 1 premier OF, a good backup catcher.

Edited to add - Cashman will go with Randolf/other replacing.

Hopefully the Yankees will CUT the payroll to $40 million and hold a "fire sale" and start over.

  • Dirty Harry, every guy you mentioned, EVERY GUY, is imovable! Quantrill and Gordon are the only 2 that have a CHANCE to go but they aren't closers, Quantrill absolutely can't close and they make way too much money in this money ball era for any decent team to have any interest in them. The Yankees will eat every penny of the contracts of Lofton, Clark and Sierra, and there is NO CHANCE someone will take Brown--the guy makes 13 MILLION! Oh poor George, no matter what he does he's screwed! And how about paying a guy like Bernie Williams 13 million to hit .250 with 16 homers and maybe 80 RBI next year--it's laughable, and it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy! That is if they have room for him next year, because if they go after Beltran you could end up paying Williams to be a guy off the bench!!! Oh, I can't stand it, I'm laughing sooooo hard!!!!!!!!!!

Toyboy - you can find a way to move anybody in MLB due to the negotiations tied to picking up parts of their salaries. Similar to the Arod deal the Yanks pulled off. Recall?

I stick with my "Out's and In's." The moneymeisters can figure out how to make it work. They will.

  • Harry, we can argue back and forth forever, but I still say the Yankees will be paying the FULL salaries of Clark, Sierra, and Lofton no matter who they're playing for--no one in baseball will pay for them. I don't have the salaries in front of me, but I'm guessing for just those 3 that's around 15-18 million. If you trade Bernie and someone takes him they aren't paying more than half, which is another 7 on the Yanks. Add part of Gordon's and Quantrill's and you're looking at around 25 million they'll be paying for players who don't play for them anymore. Add to that you can't move Brown, you just can't. I can see Brown being a long reliever next year, after his first 4 or 5 starts turn out to be disasterous (the next Black Jack McDowell maybe?). So in reality, they're paying one middle relief pitcher in real dollars nearly 40 million by this time next year--not very good economic sense. It may seem like nothing to you as a Yankees fan, but this is really what's wrong with the sport. I'm not going to get on my soapbox, but even you have to realize the Sox and Cards, at the very least, have past this team talent-wise and even with Beltran they just don't have the horses. I thought this day would never come but I'm happy to say it, the Yankees are officially rebuilding!
