I think smoebody tried to scam me!

I notice this nice PCGS 1878 8TF coin on eBay. In response to my request for larger photos, the seller emailed me back:

Super size is available to enlarge the picture. Click on enlarge pic at the bottom of pic thanks ryan

Didn't have a chance to check right away, so a day passed. Got a message from eBay saying the item was no longer valid. I then realized I had saved off the original photos and after examining them thought the coin was still worth pursuing. So I emailed the seller back and asked what happened. Here's is his response:

Ebay suspended my account citing "policy violation." I am looking in to what policy they are referring too. It might take a few days or weeks so direct e-mail is best. Yes, still have the 1878 8TF...in fact I attached my inventory list if you want others. just make an offer on any you have an interest in.

Ryan

PS..I might go out of town for a few days so respond soon if you want any, otherwise I will be back in about a week.

Hmmm..inventory list of many high grade thousand dollar morgans. Pass. I once again asked for the larger photos. Got this response:

jack -- how about 150 for the 8 tf ms 63 -- paypal 1/2 or 75 and i will send the coin -- upon receiving p[aypal another 75 or return for full refund -- ok with you ?

Basically, I replied "Sure, just send the photos". Haven't heard a word since. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Was I emailing the thief who stole smoebody's account?

Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.

  • My gut feeling is that he got NARU'ed for shill bidding. Some dealers are too lazy to send images on $100 coins. He probably owns the coin, but just doesn't want to take a lot of time on a relatively small purchase. While I don't subscribe to that logic, it is typical in the hobby.

Consider this: if he really wanted to scam you, he would offer to send you a $500 coin after you sent him only $250. Most scammers will not waste their time on a $75 "rip". jmho.

SOLUTION: Offer him 3 dealer references and ask him to ship you the coin on approval. I send many coins out on approval. If he passes, then he is probably a con, or just someone who is not very good at business.

It could be me, but you seem to be going out of your way to do business with this person. How did you get past the above statement? I'd be on to something, or smoething, else by now.
