Poll: Is your coin in its "final holder"?

RYKRYK Posts: 35,797 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have more than once overheard dealers and advanced collectors discussing a coin and saying it is in its "final holder." I assume that means that there is not likely to be an opportunity for the coin to upgrade or successfully crossover, or perhaps the coin is already maxed out or even overgraded. What percent of coins valued over $1000 are in their final NGC or PCGS holder? Given the finality of the word "final", for the purpose of this exercise, assume that final means over the next ten years and that NGC and PCGS remain the dominant TPGs over that time period.

The coins I have in my type set are in their final holders as long as I have them. I suspect that when I sell them or die, future owners will crack some of them out to get "market grades" of MS-61 to MS-63 on at least a few of them (assuming TPG's grading standards are the same as today).
  • They're in their final holders as long as I own them. Only time I crack a coin out is to put in an album/raw set.

Difficult to say. Depends on when I sell, the market perception of each grading service, their grading standards at the time, etc.

I can say they are in their final holder until I sell. Unlike some forum members, I don't make a hobby of cracking and resubmitting coins. Since starting my type set album, I've cracked out many coins to keep raw, and haven't submitted any in over a year.

  • Like those who have gone before me, as long as I own the coin, it will either stay in the current holder or be cracked to go in an album.

i pretty much have all my coins stored the way i want them. none of them are in pcgs or ngc holders though, so i'm sure that after i die, they'll end up in different holders.

I have one or two that I might like to cross from NGC, just for S&G. But for the most part they're all keepers, so it doesn't really matter if they're in a higher numbered holder.

PS: I also happen to think that most of them are graded pretty right-on, anyway.

in an ego-driven hobby such as Numismatics it's a good idea to follow the adage which states Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear. oh yeah, and stop the eavesdropping, Robert!!!image how in the hell do they know???

I don't plan on cracking any of my coins from their holders. Also, I like owning coins that appear to be undergraded since it makes them PQ for the grade.

I'm taking my coins with me, so none of my coins are in their final holder yet.

Conder, is this multiple-coin holder in your book yet?

That's a good point. When you show off your coins to other collectors, it makes it look like you have a good eye for quality for the grade. image

Most of my certified coins are in their final holders. Then again, most of my coins are still raw.

The only coins that I'll crack out some day are a couple dozen ANACS/ICG/NGC Barber Halves and submit them raw to PCGS.

Who knows, someday I'll do the same crack outs for the Barber Quarter set as well...the vast majority are in ANACS holders, and I have very few NGC Barber quarters in the set. The 13-S I have is in an ICG AU58 holder, and I know that'll be downgraded to at least a AU55; it doesn't bother me though, as the coin's so darn rare in any AU grade.

One expensive lesson I've learned is ... don't submit coins in their "other than PCGS holders" ...not if you don't want a rude awakening !
