Quick Quiz on greatest American League Teams!!!! ANSWERS PROVIDED!!!

Who were the 4 greatest American League teams in terms of winning percentage from 1901 through 2004?

(1954)Cleveland Indians--------111 43 .721 -- (1st)
(2001)Seattle Mariners----------116 46 .716 -- (2nd)
(1927)New York Yankees-------110 44 .714 -- (3rd)
(1931)Philladelphia Athletics---107 45 .704 -- (4th)
(1998)New York Yankees------ 114 48 .704 -- (5th)
(1939)New York Yankees-------106 45 .702 -- (a close 6th AL best team of all times)

We all assume that the 1998 Yankees were the best ever and yes, they had the most number of wins but also the most number of losses among this elite group of teams!!!
They did not even make the top 4!!
But both the Indians and Mariners couldn't even win the big one!!!

Who was the American League's greatest second place team (also winning percentage)?

The New York Yankees in 1954. They would have won in nearly any other year had it not been for the Indians all time greatest season!

1954 standings:
Cleveland Indians-----111 43 .721 --
NewYork Yankees-----103 51 .669 8.0

Had it not been for the Indians in 1948 and 1954, the Yankees might have been in the World Series for ALL years between 1947 through 1958 and won all of them except 1955 and 1957!!! No wonder so many rooted against the Yankees!

Who was the American League's greatest third place teams (also winning percentage)?

The New York Yankees in surprise(!) 1920:

The 1920 standings:
Cleveland Indians=====98 56 .636 --
Chicago White Sox=====96 58 .623 2.0
New York Yankees=====95 59 .617 3.0

The next best two third place teams are:
A tie between the Chicago White Sox in 1954 and the New York Yankees in 1948 as follows:

1948 standings:
Cleveland Indians----97 58 .626 --
Boston Red Sox-------96 59 .619 1.0
New York Yankees---94 60 .610 2.5

1954 standings:
Cleveland Indians-----111 43 .721 --
NewYork Yankees-----103 51 .669 8.0
Chicago White Sox---- 94 60 .610 17.0

    Good for you.

    Whats the point of your post?

    Are you trying to contradict what is now widely known as the greatest choke job in ALL of baseball history? Letting a team you had your foot on the throat of get back up and knock you out of the playoffs?

    If post-season play is included to the records........

    The 1927 Yankees have the best record ever !!

    This aint no party,... this aint no disco,.. this aint no fooling around.
  • Including Post Season, the 1998 Yankees have the most wins ever.

    125 Wins, 50 Losses for a .714 winning percentage which the Babe would love. image

    Funny that spammy slams joestalin consistently on living in the past, yet that's ALL he has done since the yankees pulled off the biggest choke job in the history of MLB...'well back in 1998, we were the bestest!!1!!1!!'

    Lame.

    Axtell Rose, the original post was about past teams. I did not start it, ms700 did. It gave me the opportunity to bring up the record-breaking 1998 Yankees and ckoking 2001 Mariners.

    You are making the proverbial fool of yourself.

    No big deal but........

    The 27 Yanks have a total, with postseason, win percentage of .722
    The 98 Yanks have a total, with postseason, win percentage of .714

    No AL team ever won a greater percentage of games that counted than the 1927 NY Yankees.

    jaxxr, correct me if I am wrong but the 1998 Yankees had 125 wins including post season. Has any AL team won more? You are correct about winning percentage and that was the question in the original post.

    Gem,

    I do not dispute the fact the 98 Yanks won more games, but of course they played more in the regular season and more in the expanded playoffs as well. Winning pecentage was the original query.

    How bout them 2004 Redsox ????? already leading in game 3 ?????????? who knows...
