Is the Pop report useless now?

Now that the Registry lists the total number of cards in that particular grade, is it pointless to subscribe to the Pop Report?

The pop report is still the place to go to for the total number graded of any card.

For example, if you need to find out how many 1953 Topps Willie Mays are graded say PSA 5, you can go to the pop report and find that out, along with the total number 1953 Topps Mays in all grades. The registry only shows how many are in the same grade or higher that the specific card in that set. So, if you're looking at a PSA 7 Mays on the registry, it will only show the number of PSA 7's, along with the number that are graded higher (the total combined in 8, 9 and 10). It doesn't break down the number of 8's, number of 9's and number of 10's.

So right now for me, the pop report is still where it's at.

Plus the sets where there are few if any sets registered. And if there are only 9s registered and you're looking for 8s. On the whole, though I'm pleased with this development.

...And don't forget the pop report is good to see the overview of a set. If you landed say a 1966 PSA-10 common, you can view the pop report to see how many other PSA-10's have been graded for all cards in the set and how many total cards submitted. The pop reports still give us a lot of data..jay

Don't forget that the pop report is slanted because of:

    1. lost cards
    2. cards that have been cracked and submitted to other companies
    3. cards that have been cracked and resubmitted to PSA (I happen to make up 90% of the population for 200 bowman chrome gold refractor Ichiro Suzuki English and Japanese rookies)

Highly inaccurate anyway you slice it.

Less inaccurate than no report at all by a wide margin, though.

For those of you who crack out cards and resubmit, you can do something to prevent the pop report inaccuracies that result... return your flips to PSA! They will gladly take them and make pop report adjustments.

I tried that once and the Pop. Reports were not adjusted and the cert #'s remained in the database. I never bothered to help on my own dime and time again in that arena.

I'm kind of with Vargha on that one. They (PSA) doesn't really seem to care about the information/value of returning flips to them.

And I certainly don't want to go on some sort of "list" of conscientous objectors as it relates to their grading ability. Because, frankly, every time I crack a card and re-submit - it is just a testament that I feel that PSA either doesn't grade fair or is inconsistent with their grading standards.

Thus - if I cared, or if PSA cared, of if it didn't cost me $$$ with uncertain results, or if there wasn't a risk of being black-listed, perhaps I would be a little more proactive.

    But - I'm not
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I've turned in flips that others have left behind at shows after cracking cards out. In each of those cases, it appeared that the card was cracked out because its grade had harmed its sales value - one was an '86/'87 Jordan sticker with a 8(ST) grade, and the others were modern rookies with 8 grades or (OC) qualifiers.

I never followed up to see whether they removed the certification numbers.

It is not that difficult to throw twenty or more PSA flips into a small envelope and add a dollar postage, so PSA can adjust its population report. PSA has always adjusted the population for the flips that I return.

They never adjusted the pop report when I sent back the flips for the 2001 Bowman Chrome Gold Refractor Ichiro Suzuki English and Japanese versions. According to the Pop Report (scroll down to the bottom) there are 15 of each graded, with 27 of the 30 grading 9. I cracked 22 of those 27 and sent them off to BGS where I got some 9.5s. But PSA never updated their pop report even though I paid money to send the slips and paid money to have them sign for it. There are only 100 of them, (of which only 50 were ever issued do to expired redemption and unopened packs) and yet PSA likes to think that they have 60% of the existing ones graded by them still. So now, PSA owes me money because:
I paid to have the cards removed from the pop report with no result
I paid to have cards graded but they were sent back ev. of trim. even though when resubmitted they graded just fine
I NEVER receive my SMR magazine, and I always need to re-request it after everyone has had it for a month, and I only get a response from half of my e-mails
In total, I'd say they owe me a good $200-300. I'd love to get some free grading certs! image

Maybe if you contact Joe Orlando directly, PSA will reimburse you for your losses in the form of cash or in the form of free submissions.
  • Very interesting comments about the Flips. I have about 20 here that I intend to return to PSA that I cracked out because the card will sell better raw than the grade they slapped on it.

I figure I should return them and hoepfully they will adjust the pop report. I don't want overinflated numbers on the sets that I collect. I'll do what I can to control that.

  • In the registry, the total number of cards graded higher than your does not include cards with qualifiers. Personally I am not interested in cards with Q's, but I suppose some might be and would not be able to obtain this info from the registry.

    just my 2 cents worth
