Opinions on this 1894 Morgan Dollar Please (Larger Pictures Added)

moosesrmoosesr Posts: 1,966 ✭✭✭
I just received this 1894 Morgan Dollar in the mail today. It is in a PCI holder graded XF 45. I ordered it sight unseen thinking the price was right, but now I have the coin in hand and it looks like it may be less than XF grade and may also have PCV residueimage There is a slight green tint around the rims and devices and it also has a couple of what looks like lumps of dirt on the cheek. The green tint is not noticeable without magnification and I don't know if the green shows in my pictures.

The dealer didn't mention any of these problems when he described the coin to me on the telephone. Any comments/recommendations on this coin would be appreciated.

I added some larger pictures. I hope this helps.

Thanks,
Charlieimage

I can't tell much from the picture, but it looks like it could be XF45.

  • The coin could be an EF with a weak strike.....can't see the color or the dirt because the scans too small. With it being in a PCI holder I wouldn't be surprised if it was overgraded.....image

EF grade would be a little to much for that one, IMO. I think the money you paid is ok though. image

Why would you buy a coin in a PCI holder sight unseen? Did you take that into account when you
bought the coin? Hopefully you bought it cheap and with a return policy.

Bigger scans would help, but it looks XF40 at best to me, and suspiciously like VF35 per the inside of the left wing.

Is that a scratch in front of Liberty's face, and if so how bad is it?
    When in doubt, don't.

I probably shouldn't have bought the coin sight unseen, but I have bought coins from this dealer before and have been satisfied with the coins I received. He also has a good return policy. The coin was less than $1200 and I thought that was very reasonable for this coin if it graded close to XF. I am trying to get some larger pictures posted that will show the green. If you look close, you can just seen some green on the small pictures I already posted.

That is a small scratch in front of Liberty's face and I think it is minor since it isn't noticeable unless you get the lighting just right.

That coin has PVC damage beyond repair, to the point of causing corrosion.

Sounds like I should send it back for a refund?

Yes. Which PCI holder is this coin in? A gold label or green label? If it is a green label, how many digits are in the certification number?

Wing picture tells me it's VF35. And there is PVC residue. And the scratch.

    I agree, send it back.
    When in doubt, don't.

    It's a gold label PCI.

Would it work to crack it out and use acetone to remove the PVC, or would I risk not getting the coin back in a holder?

An 1894 is an 1894; I'll take it anytime, day or night under any party's administration, Democrats, Repulicans; ship it to me (for the right price of courseimage)

No, those two dark circles on the cheek are PVC damage that are most likely to have already eaten into the surface. For the price you paid, it's not worth it. Send it back for a refund.

Here is a post I made four months ago dealing with Morgans and PVC. I hope you find the information useful.

Send it back. Take advantage of your return policy. The coin looks like it has PVC damage.
Why risk conserving the coin when you have nothing invested in it except for postage
    and handling.

K6AZ... Those black spots are raised and look like dirt, is that what PCV damage looks like? I thought the damage would be green.
  • K6AZK6AZ Posts: 9,295
They go from very light green, to dark green, to almost black. If they are raised, you have some major craters underneath.

The coin will be going back tomorrow for a refund.

Thanks to everyone for your inputs!

  • Keep in mind that the dealer sold you the coin for not much more than a cleaned example goes for at Heritage. The problem is the possible pitting that PVC can cause. Good advice on this forum because there's just nothing you can do and its a shame someone improperly stored the coin. The grade/price VF vs. EF just is not all that important on this semi-key with a MS-63 price fast approaching $6,000. Too bad.
