Circulation finds: Jefferson & Lincoln with Cuds

Here are a couple of interesting circulation finds I made during the 1990's: a 1984 Lincoln and a 1983 Jefferson with massive rim breaks. I'm sure they're only worth a few bucks each, but they were "free" so you won't hear me complaining.

I have viewed close to a half million Lincolns with magnification in my time and have yet to find a single CUD. I think you did great!

  • Nice finds!
  • I found this '82 in a roll a month or two back.

That 1982 cent posted by Smitty79 is interesting. It looks like the broken die also resulted in a slightly off-center strike, as if the uneven flow of metal somehow forced the dies slightly out of alignment.

Cuds and other errors are appealing because they are among the few modern coins that are released into circulation and are truly scarce, providing an opportunity to find a rare coin or two in change.

I never found a cud before but I have brought many, the 1983 nickel cud is relatively common and I have seen many different 1983 cuds including a double cud.

Coin World ran a story about a 1983-P quarter cud a few years back and I found it
the same day in a roll of quarters. Mine was a later die state and lower grade though.
It was just covered in minor die cracks and it looked like the die must have been breaking
up very quickly. It had a cud on the obverse and reverse.

I've owned lots of cuds but this was the only one I'd ever found.
