How do I sell an expensive coin across the country.

Just a question I'm pondering. I have been discussing selling a coin to a registry set guy. The coin is about $2500. We have never done business before. I can't believe he would send money to me and I feel odd sending a coin to him. How would you complete this transaction. Would I be foolish to send him the coin on approval? I've had dealers send me coins on approval and I've sent out money to dealers and on ebay but never for this much. Any ideas?

  • Escrow service. It's a cheap but effective form of insurance, and you will sleep much better at night if $2.5k gives you pause.

I'd suggest that each of you provide the best references (numismatic and, if necessary, otherwise) you can. Hopefully, one of you can make the other feel comfortable enough to be willing to send the coin or the payment first.

If not, you might consider going through an escrow company or even a mutually agreed upon third party, such as a coin collector or dealer.

<<<How would you complete this transaction.>>> He sends $$, then when you get $$ you send the coin by Registered Mail.

<<<Would I be foolish to send him the coin on approval?>>> I'd offer a return policy whereas if he didn't like the coin he sends it back to you by Registered Mail, then you return his $$. No approval service.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Well, if you don't accept Paypal, you'll need to wait 10 business days for the check or money order to clear.
Yes they are counterfeiting money orders nowadays.
Then you mail the coin registered and insured to the buyer's "real" address, not a PO box.
Make sure it is ruggedly packed well too, with the edges taped so that it can't slip out easily.
If he doesn't trust you then you need to use a escrow service.

The buyer should send the money to me and the seller should send the coin to me.

This will work out pretty good - for me

Or you can use eBay's approved escrow service
