Muled proof reverse? Wash QTR guys, is this legit?

Comments

  • Yes, these are the type A and B reverses found on quarters from 1956(?) through 1964.
  • Also, I don't believe that it was an error the proof reverses were used, as the seller states, but that the mint intentionally used them when they had finished minting proofs for the year.

So, it really wouldn't be classified as any kind of "mule" but rather a particular die marriage?

  • Well, I've never heard of these varieties (i.e. B reverses) being termed "mules" before...

It's only a mule if a jackass is selling it--------------------BigE

  • If I'm not mistaken, I believe mules are duel denomination, like a quarter obverse and nickel reverse or something like that.

The type "b" reverse appears on some quarters right up through 1972.

Mules are generally considered to be a pairing of dies which normally were
not used together. The term usually is not applied to coins like this but they
    are technically mules.

The mint did some strange things with reverse dies from about 1955 to 1984.
