Hi Michael,
The 1909-S VDB has been an extremely high demand coin for over 50 years. They were actually saved in the year of issue...as are almost all first year of issue coins. And they have been such collector favorite that people just keep them. Old timers I talked to many years ago told me how people spent proof gold coins during the Depression because no one wanted to pay $21 for a Matte Proof $20 St. Gaudens and $20 was a lot of money then. But no one was spending their 1909- S VDBs!
