Blown Save Rule

What's with this Blown Save rule when a pitcher comes in with the bases loaded and no outs? A sacrifice fly brings home the go ahead run with no hits. That rule should change.

Sorry - just accept the fact that the Red Sox are Mariano's daddy - and he blew another one. In order to save the game, and the lead, you can't give up anything including a sac fly. Nice try.

It would not be a loss, it would not affect his ERA, but yes, it is a blown save.

  • Just to be fair, I also think the when a reliever comes in with runners on the bases if he allows anyone to score, 1/2 run should go to the reliever, 1/2 run to the starter. ERA is a fraction so this could be done. Believe it or not, but during MLB's 100 years rules have changed. Did you know at one time the rule stated if a ball bounced into the stands it was considered a HR rather than a Ground Rule Double?

I am not copping out either. I have proposed this rule for years. Too me it would be the fairest.

Interesting point, but I disagree. You put a man on and he scores, it is your earned run ... unless he reaches on an error.

  • they have half sacks, so why can't they have half earned runs?

Exactly - I really like this half run idea. No way they implement it, however...

Unfair, who gave up the hit that produced the run?

No I am not. Re-read my posts. I am saying if a reliever comes in and alows a run to score on a hit then he should be charged 1/2 a run (not beneficial to releivers or Mariano ). I am also saying if a reliever comes in and gives up no hits but a runner scores on a sacrifice fly than he should not be charged for that run and it should not be considrered a blown save. Mariano was lights out last night. It was Gordon who screwed up.
