Pedigree of Coins

Exactly what does it mean to have a pedigree on a coin and what advantages are there to doing this?

There have been numerous threads here on pedigrees. Many think that they add cachet, if not value, to a coin. Other feel that they are irrelevant. In my thinking, numismatics is about history and pedigrees are part of a coin's history. I have two big name pedigreed coins in my collection, one relatively minor coin from the Bass Collection and one minor coin form the Norweb Collection:



One of my collecting goals is to someday get a coin from the Mad Marty Collection:
