Awesome 1972 Topps set on Ebay

Being posted by a good guy and a stickler for condition

I really love the colors of this set - and Mike put together a fine effort.

Am hoping that we can celebrate this set and his accomplishments here.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Marc,it took me a long time to really appreciate the 72 Topps.I couldn't stomach the designs and shut my interests out on 72.I think that's the only reason I didn't care for them. The the registry came about and I was still in the I don't like 72s frame of mind.

Over time, watching the 72 collectors work,Reading up on Mike, and flipping through 72 binders at shows I've learned to appreciate something I didn't before.

I see no bids on this set yet. I am very curious if you are getting e-mails from any potential buyers? Do you think you have a chance for it sell, or even get any bids. I have an early 70's set I want to sell if this works out for you.

    RobBob,
I had a few inquiries prior to listing it but nothing really worked out. I'm not totally surprised that there are no bids. If there is a bid, I'd expect it would be entered at the last minute. Obviously there's a chance I'll sell it, just have to wait until tomorrow night.

I set the opening bid at $12k because that's about what I have in it. The way I see the set breaking down for the $12k figure -
668 PSA8s at an average of $11.50 each (average of ALL PSA8s - HOFers, low-pops, commons, etc)
118 PSA9s at an average of $35 each (average of all 9s - incl Clemente IA, F Robinson, Perry, Wilhelm, several hi#s, commons, etc)

  • Mike,

What an awesome set, i saw tonight it closed without any bids. I'm a little suprised it did'nt sell but it is a lot of money for the ordinary collector to come up with. I'd love to have it myself but i'm several thousand short of being able to aquire this awesome set. Is there any history of complete 60's or 70's sets being sold on e bay or other auctions with success? I remember seeing a sharp 1971 set a while back on e bay and i don't think it sold either. take care and good luck with the set. Phil

I was sort of disappointed it didn't sell, but not totally surprised. I know mine is the first complete 1972 set containing all PSA8 or better to be auctioned off anywhere. A couple years ago, Carlos Aponte's 72 set was autioned on Superior but it had some cards below PSA8 NQ.

Right now I'm in the process of deciding whether I can get out of it what I want by breaking it up - or if I should re-list it at an adjusted price. I'm hoping to decide by tomorrow and will advise everyone then.

Consign it to the next Mastonet.
All the heavy hitters seem to line up there.

    Mike,

I wouldn't lower your price for eBay. I think your price is fine (clearly lower than SMR). I'd contact MastroNet (or one of the other big outfits) and see what they say. If they'd take it on consignment without charging you a seller's fee, I'd jump on that. Good luck!

At what price do you think Mastros would not charge the consignor a fee just to have an item in its auction? I would think the item would need to be more than $12K.
  • I think that part of the problem is the market for PSA 8 cards in this set. Many have sold for $6-7 lately. I don't follow the set very well but I know I bought a bunch of cards from Stump in that range a couple months ago.

I bought Mike's 1975 set last year at the opening bid on eBay and Steve (Machodoc) bought somebody else's 1975 set for BIN last year if my memory serves me correctly. The issue is having the $ available at the time to make such a purchase. Most of the big $ purchasers (of which I am not) do not collect sets this new.
  • Dave,

You are correct, I bought Danny Thompson's 1975 set at a $10,000 BIN in July 2003, and there was a nice 1965 set listed on eBay earlier this summer but the seller was inexperienced and yanked it around a few times, alienating potential buyers, including me.

Mike, at this stage I think an auction house is a serious consideration and if you can afford to wait it out a little bit I would advised against selling it off piecemeal.

  • I put my '70 set on ebay just to see what would happen the same week that Mike sold his '75 set. It didn't sell so I relisted it right after it ended, just to see if there was any interest. I didn't really anticipate that it would sell, but it sold for the minimum bid of $14,500. I wouldn't say that selling a complete set on ebay is the way to go, but occasionally you can get lucky.

I'd list it again, Mike. You never know who missed it the first time around or was just about ready to place that bid, and decided not to. Maybe this week that guy will have that extra few hundred bucks that will put him over the top and allow him to place a bid. image

A set of this magnitude is too much for this period of the year.Thanksgiving around the corner and then Christmas.People are just recovering from getting their kids back to school or whathave you.The best thing to do if you can is wait until after Christmas when people have that bonus money and Christmas money.

Sum is greater in parts but it would be fantastic if you could make it a one owner transaction.I think you could but a breakup that would take about 30 days (And you have over 60 before 12/26) of spare time to organize will produce satisfying results if you ebay individual cards.

BTW-12/26 is Free listing day and it's absolutely the best time to swing it.
