Overdates...

Hi, Everybody -

If I wanted an overdate as a conversation piece, what would you recommend? Which ones don't you need a glass to see?

here's a nice 1806/5 quarter in an affordable, collector grade:

don't need a glass to see it, heck, don't even need very good eyesight!

Many early overdates are very prominent. Most of the newer overdates are tougher to see, though the 1942/1 Mercs are an obvious exception.

1942/1941 for sure. Blatent! I showed my daughter it, and she thought it was 194 twelve!!!

I find mint marks hard to tell. Even with a glass.

An extremely obvious one is the 1817/3 Capped Bust half. These aren't cheap, nor are they very expensive, but they have a wildly evident underdigit.

The 1820/19 curl 2 bust half is slightly less prominent than the 1817/13 that Tom mentioned, but is less than half the price, and fairly easy to find. A F12 would be somewhere around $80, the overdate is very visible in this grade.

the 1818/7 and the 1829/7 halves are also decent choices, the underdate is less apparent than the above dates but these overdates cost just about the price of a normal date.

1807/6 S-273 large cent. Common, easy to see, very impressive, and not expensive.
