"Grade-flation" vs. "Buy the coin, not the holder"

The old days of "buy the coin..." is ok, but not realistic for the times, imho. The game has long-since changed. As most all the dealers know, now it is to play with(in) the grade-flation scenario. It makes sense for the dealers to say the old mantra "buy the coin, not the holder" to stay in business. Can you imagine them saying "pass" on all newly upgraded coins??? PCGS runs the game now, based on their standards du jour. Any dealer who says that they "have a handle" on the standards, and therefore, the market, is talking through their hat.
For the time-being, I'll stick with ms/pf 70s, thank you very much.

It's this same logic I use to stick with PO01s.
As Clinton would say - "I feel your pain". But, I prefer to not comment on the classic coin "upgrade game" at this point. Instead, let me comment on your current enjoyment of the "70's market". What many collectors have discovered (like yourself) already is that building a set of MS70 or PR70 coins can not only be challenging from the standpoint of locating "PCGS perfect" coins (which in many cases can be very difficult), but, also, in the case of PR70's, "upgrading" can be a lifetime pursuit, just as upgrading a classic coin collection can be IMHO. And, by "upgrading", I mean the constant pursuit of "PCGS perfect" coins with the best DEEP, DEEP CAMEOS one can locate. A perfect example of this being a collection I am currently working on - Proof Lincoln Memorial Cents from 1959-date and trying to locate the greatest quality coins within the series with the strongest DEEP, DEEP CAMEO surfaces. Another example is Edson's #1 PR70DCAM Kennedy collection and his constant pursuit of even greater MONSTER DEEP CAMEO specimens to improve upon the collection. I have also spent the better part of the past half year examining COUNTLESS THOUSANDS of PCGS-PR69DCAM Ike Dollars in my quest to build the greatest MONSTER DEEP, DEEP CAMEO IKE collection imaginable. In this case, PR69DCAM (as CLAD Ikes rarely come PR70DCAM), but, same idea. And, while 72(p) Ikes in MS66 are lovely coins - I'll tell you this - IMHO (with respect to Ikes) there is nothing more beautiful than an incredible, near perfect, MONSTER DEEP, DEEP CAMEO IKE Dollar Proof. Just from this brief post, you can easily see just how busy one can be kept building a great collection of modern coins - be it in 69 grade (like the Proof Ikes) or in the 70 grade.
