Coin Show Report: Toledo, Ohio

I met another board member today at the monthly "Blue Ribbon" coin show in Toledo, Ohio. I've been going to this show for about 6 months now. I had the chance to spend some quality time looking at all the 30 or so dealers inventory. The coins were average at best in most cases. I did see some quality PCGS coins but they were overpriced to say the least. Apparently people in the Midwest think a Toned coin will comand 10x actual value even if they are "ugly" toned. Toned coins were scarce and mostly raw and mostly ugly. The attendence was small imho. Basically it was the same old dealers with the same old coins. I go to these shows to find raw coins but it is getting very tough to find raw coins that have not been cleaned. Of the 50+ raw coins I seriously examined, 47 or 48 had issues. I looked at Unc. Barbers, UNC IHC's, UNC WLH's, UNC SLQ's, and several other late 1800's, early 1900's coins. Most of the IHC's and early Wheats looked recolored or cleaned. Overall a raw coin hunter is finding slim pickins these days.

It seems that finding decent coins is tough these days even at small shows like this. It also seems that many dealers have adopted the Coin World monthly coin prices guide as the standard for their pricing which is unrealistic IMHO. Even though I did not find much to buy I still enjoyed my time surrounded by coins and good friends.

BTW, I bought a sweet, original 1891 IHC in MS64-65? Red condition and a 1865 2c piece in MS63-4 RB/BR. Both were raw.
