Hey Cacheman, is this a Goetz???

Picked it up at the show today. Is it a Goetz? If so how much is it worth?

Thanks

Is that a "K" near his knee? Is there anything on the edge of the medal? If I had a Forrer set I'd look into it for you but I don't yet. S

Hey Marty, does that medal show Freddie Mercury wearing a fanny-pack and walking through a field?

No, not Goetz. It's from Kulmbach, which is in Bavaria and I have little doubt that he would have seen this medal. Can you make out the designer's initial(s)? Are there any markings on the edge?

    Looks like an "MMK" monogram.

It does look like a monogram, but it's one I've not seen before. Possibly R. Küchler, but I wouldn't swear by it.

  • This is a tough one. Are those letters "K" and "R"? If so, I would agree it could be Rudolf Kuchler. Forrer shows him active at least until 1915 so a medal from 1925 isn't unlikely. The same is possible for Reinhard Kullrich who was active at least as late as 1913. Nothing else is obvious in Forrer, at least to me... image

It's hard to read but it looks like L. Chr. Lauer and Nuernberg. That would be consistent, however it's the name of the company named L. Chr. Lauer, which was located in that city. The gentleman himself died in 1873. The engraver could have been one of the Lauer family but the company struck medals for other artists as well. Hm...

Ludwig Christian Lauer is his full name. The company often commissioned out some of their work to well-known engravers, so it's not unlikely that the monogram is the mark of someone like Küchler.
