Is this a real gold piece or repro?

I was wondering if anyone knew this seller or if anyone knows if these are real or reproductions? He does have other gold coins. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=527&item=3934888565&rd=1

Even though I know nothing whatsoever about Peruvian coinage, I can still use the Krause and common sense to obtain a couple of clues:

    1. The 1865 sol (Peru) is silver.

    2. If the coin were genuine, the market would have driven the coin up to the proper price by now. Few gold pieces sell under melt value.

Of course, I have no idea what size that item is - there's just a fuzzy picture.

I sort of figured that. Do you think that it is real gold or just a gold colored coin?

I can't say for 100% certain, but I'm betting it's not real gold. It could be a modern repro and be gold. If it's not listed in Krause, however, I avoid it.

Again, the current price tells me a lot here.

  • That design was minted in the 1950`s - 60`s time period. The 5 sol in the mid 1960`s can be had in nice condition for usually in the 50.00 dollar range and the 10 sol for under 100.00 Remember, even though these coins are modern, to me they are still a great bargain. You are talking about mintages of only a couple of thousand on the high end.

Thanks for weighing in, rookie! There is a lot for me to learn on this side.

Welcome, Ormandh!! Your instincts were right on. The design is a bit crudely rendered compared to the "real thing", so I don't think it's one that has been gilded either. There's no telling what its actual composition is, but it looks like a cast copy that has been gilded; alternatively, it could even be made from yellow brass.
