So someone comes out of nowhere, lists a completed set and uses the Registry to advertise it for sa

Wasn't there a thread recently regarding use of the Registry as advertisement to sell a set?

An entire set was just listed.

Is it or is it not against the rules to list a set solely to advertise it as follows?

Owner's Comments:
Offered by Heritage at the 2005 Fort Lauderdale FUN Signature Auction

So let's rumble. Is what I just copied and pasted, as written by the owner/ poster of
a brand new set, a violation of the rules....to use the Registry as advertisement?

Here ya go. What is this, a billboard advertising a put together set, explicitly for sale?
Nothing wrong with selling your set but as Craig just said, using the Registry as a vehicle is not acceptable!

Too bad the guy couldn't get it into the top 10 before going to market.

I'm sure it's a nice set, but being #11 isn't quite the same as #1

I'm not sure if it violates the registry rules or not, but it sure stinks.

    Not this topic again.

Didn't I get in enough trouble with the last thread? image

  • I don't see anything wrong with it ... If he said he was selling one or two particular coins out of the set I might have a problem with that. He's not, he's selling the whole set at F.U.N. To me it's just an informational comment ...
  • Brilliant marketing. What a splash. Breaks the rules.....maybe on a Friday evening when Carol is unavailable AND when everyone is on the boards to read about the set being available.

Gets it linked in the PCGS US coin forum.

    BRILLIANT!

I'd like to hire the guy.

    (yawn)

Edited to add: I do not think it to be such a big deal. People use the registry as a marketing tool all the time. And this is the 11th finest Washington quarter set. I guess it would be more interesting if it were the finest Washington set or the 11th finest complete set of large cents by Sheldon number.
  • What's a matter, you don't like mint state Washington Quarters?
  • I honestly thought this was the purpose of the registry -

Although I can see some being bothered by this, I don't personally have a problem. But then again, my entire collection is available for a price. You might not like the price, but it is available. image

What I find interesting is that there are very nice coins available that aren't on the registry. What I would like to know is how recently did these get graded, has he had this set put away for a while and just got it certified to sell? It makes you wonder just how many great coins are stored away and not on the market.

I see the purpose of the registry as a place to show off your collection (This is why I hate people with closed sets and sets that don't picture their coins), and if you feel so, to compete againest other sets... not as a way to market and sell your coins...

  • I think there is good reasons why some one might not list a set while building it. Now that he chooses to sell it in a couple months. How would he discribe ?, (If listed this would be the 11th finest? ) So I could go either way here.

I can't see where the "11th finest washington set" is a great selling point.

    It's better than 12th, 30th, or 50th

Also, others can buy upgrades. He obviously has better coins than many so people will upgrade their sets. He probably has a good shot at getting some good prices as those below him bid to get better grades.

As you can see the 11th finest set has created more buzz around here not because it's the 11th finest, but because the person put it on the regisrtry in the first place.

Maybe he thinks so too, and the seller.
And getting up to 11 isn't that easy on any of the sets if your on a budget.

It's often done by the "broker" that brings the collection to market, not necessarily the seller. I had assumed the auction houses do it too - am I mistaken?? I personally don't see a problem with the listing.

  • I totally agree with RYK. If ANY seti is posted, is it not being advertised anyway??? You should be allowed to put info like that in your comments. It's a set that will not be a set anymore. So be it!!
