Have you ever had this happen? Someone with a 0 feedback places a bid within SECONDS of a listing?

My morgan auctions got bid on by a 0 feedback member with "ibuypcgs" in their name within seconds of listing. What's going on? Are there programs that allow people to make new accounts and instantly bid on auctions with keywords in them (like pcgs?)

Has anyone ever had that happen before? I hope people don't think I am shill bidding...image

  • This bidder does seem strange. Hope the guy pays you if he wins.

Most shill bidding is hard to detect -- likely done though a circle of friends with well established Ebay accounts. I've only seen the zero and one feedback shills on the fake chinese coins.

  • I have had it happen recently. Within 15 seconds of me listing a coin, I had somebody with a 0 feedback place a bid on it. Must've just been good timing on their part. They only bid the one time... something small like $10 or so (the coin eventually sold for over $150). But, yes, I don't like the 0 feedback bidders who bid repeatedly because they definitely look like shills.
  • A variation on a shill, most likely. They bid an insanely high amount which insures that they will most likely win the item. If the item ends low, they pay, take the coin and resell under another ID. If the price is too high, they screw you and walk away knowing that their primary ebay ID is still secure. I've bid against people like that and gotten second chance offers from the sellers for being top underbidder because some jerk like this screwed them over.

  • What I find interesting is that mbcoins is the underbidder on both your Morgans and that he was outbid by just 1 cent on one of them. Suspicious?? Seems to fit my theory above. I think mbcoins might be behind both user IDs.

Here's a suggestion, if you get screwed and mbcoins is still the underbidder, DON'T extend a second chance offer to him. I think you'd be playing into his game if you do.

OK, now I'm high bidder on one and underbidder on the other. If this is a scam to get a lowball second chance offer, mbcoins will have to outbid me. Let's watch and see what happens. (Don't worry, if item that I am high bidder on ends with me as high bidder, I'll still buy it.)

Thanks!! image Your very kind! We'll see what happens! I am still a new seller and I'm still trying to learn some of these ropes! It is great to have this board to learn from!

Don't be overly suspicious though it is wise to be careful.

I was sniping auctions with less than 10 seconds to go when I had zero feedback and I've ALWAYS sent payment immediately afterwards.

It happens during legitimate transactions a fair percentage of the time.

yeah, it wasn't so much the zero feedback that bothered me. I was just amazed that it happened seconds after I listed the item and I wondered if some automatic keyword bidding was happening. (espicially with "pcgs" in their name and 0 feedback.)

Thanks for your help guys and gals!

    sliderider,

You're barking up the wrong tree with that assumption.

I use PCGS in eBay search for coins all the time. If you make the seach PCGS Morgan you can get a email from ebay everytime somebody lists a PCGS certified Morgan dollar.
I use MS68 PCGS in the Kennedy's and get a notification withen 15 minutes of a listing. Was able to BIN one of my 68's that way.
And just like here some collectors can have Alt. eBay accounts.

I think you're being paranoid. Simple as that.

To sliderider, I think you are way offbase in suggesting that mbcoins is doing something underhanded here. I have known, and done business with, mbcoins for a number of years and he is a truly upstanding person. He is also a member here on these boards, so you may wish to send him a PM if you are suspicious of him.

  • I am one who finds Sliderider's posts troubling. At the risk of getting off topic, I must say something. I took the liberty of looking at the auctions in question. Just out of curiosity, I looked at slideriders feedback. Something interesting jumped out at me. You have 37 retracted bids in the last six months. Now with you messing with these two auctions, you may have to add to that. You sir need to keep your hands off the keyboards and quit messing with EBAY auctions. Although my EBAY selling handle is secret, I am letting you know now that I have blocked your bids because of all your retracted bids. Im surprised that EBAY has not NARU'd you for this. As far as this post is concerned, someone just happend to hit a search at the right time. I dont think any thing sinister is going on here at all. I too have traded with MBcoins before and have been well pleased. JMHO.

Sliderider, you really do need to stop retracting bids. If someone reports your 37 retractions to eBay, you will likely be suspended.
