now that the U.S.-Philippines have made it to the registry...

has there been a marked interest in these coins? I would sure like to see some increased forum discussion on these...

I'm interested in them and intend to start my collection early next year. Any recommended dealers?

Careful, I might take you up on your offer some day. The flight from Seoul isn't very long nor too expensive.
  • Mabuti po, piagowjohnny! The Lady Liberty on large pesos is very beautiful. Yes, they are very hard to find nice. The dealers used to clean their pesos.

Tumuss, not nice. This is for the reverse of coins not reverse of girls.

The three commems make a nice addition to your Classic commemorative set. I consider them bona fide US commemoratives, as they were minted under authority of the US Mint, while the Philippines was a US possession. Being minted in the mega commem year of 1936 doesn't hurt, either. These are surprisingly hard to find in higher grades, given that only 10,000 were minted, and many of them dumped into the sea -- yet quite affordable when you do come across one.

brightyoungfilipina - Don't be scared I won't hold you to the coin dealer introductions if I get to the Philippines one day.

Flaminio - Thanks for the information about the Philippines commemoratives. When I first started collecting the Early Commemoratives I visited your webpage, read your collecting goals and noted that you had included the Philippines Commems in your Early Commemoratives set. An interesting perspective. I'll be looking for them for my USA/Philippines type set so I guess I can consider them a part of both sets.

    The darkside is creeping in....
  • Hi Flaminio: Yes, the two 1936 pesos and the 50 centavo are nice US commemoratives. The Murphy is harder to find in good condition than the Roosevelt.

I'm sorry USAROK; this is not your fault. What Tumuss said make me very uncomfortible. Then your note came after his. Not your fault what he did.

    Hello Sumnon: What is "Darkside"

Classes started again. I am busy. But I made Registry set collections for half centavos, centavos, 5 centavos, and 10 centavos. Go take a look if you are interested. I am proud of them.

    Dang it!
Some of these Philippine coins are nicer than I thought.
I may have to get the wife a nice set.

BYF (and others)....what is a nice looking, inexpensive, set of US-Philippine coins?
She was born in the Philippines, so she may actually like them......(and, maybe get her off her "gotta be gold" kick).

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    Wow!
I just cruised over to the reg sets and looked.
Unless there are some submitted soon, it will be very hard to get highend over there.
JHF and BYF are both having some top pops, and there aren't many in those top pops.
The 1905 50c Centavos (I think that's the one I looked at) for Proof...they each have one of the PR66RD and it is pop 2/0

    Wow!

  • Dear 1907 Quarter:

Well, you had me fooled too. I thought that 5 centavo was proof. But proof or business strike, it's a dazzler, as was your 1905 centavo in MS64 red. The centavos in red are gorgeous to look at, and sometimes, with the right toning, a red brown can be too.

I also like your description of the design, "minimalist." Strong, beautiful designs with nothing cluttering it up. That says it.

    Hi Bochiman:

Yes, these coins are very attractive. I don't know what your budget is, but you can start your wife off on AU Pesos. They're big coins which look nice and which come very nice in AU. Better yet, for now they're are quite inexpensive ($50 or $100 in AU55 or 58) for all but the hardest dates. The Commonwealth series, from 1936 forward, is also quite inexpensive.

As you noted, the populations in higher grades are absurdly low. There are 13 dates in the pre-commonwealth peso series, and the total pop in gem for all the pesos combined is just 33 coins (April 2004). There are just 3 MS66s and 1 MS67 in the whole series. They're as scarce as the overdate Buffalo Nickel or the overdate Standing Liberty Quarter. If these were mainstream US coins, they'd be selling for 6 figures, like the overdates. But they don't even sell for a tenth.

Because of the incredible scarcity of these coins and because they're gaining acceptance as US coins, once US collectors start going after them, you're going to have the classic situation of strong demand and minimal supply. And then, I think the prices of even "common" date US Philippines coins in gem are going to go berserk.

That could be 6 months from now or 5 years. But I'm in no hurry. In the meantime, I just sit back and enjoy myself with these beautiful coins, and upgrade my sets every chance I get.

    Cordially,

    Just Having Fun

  • tsacch: Shame on you. You say "family, kids" in signature, but say ugly thing you learn in bad bar to me. You say that to your wife, not me. Maybe you tell your wife you say that to 19 year old Filipina and then no more family or kids.
  • Just-
Great seeing you back on the boards! (Another USPI person to talk to!) Regarding the 5 centavos, are you referring to the 1930M as being the one that looks like a proof?

  • Hello 1907Quarter! Yes, I've noticed that I've come back to these boards. And between our bright young Filipina friend, you, and a few others like Bochiman, paigow Johnny, and Blackhawk with his great error coin, it's been an interesting and fun conversation going back and forth about these coins.

Actually, you're the first active collector of the US-Philippines I've ever run into in America. I did run into another, but that was several years ago when he was selling his collection. I did pick up a whole bunch of nice stuff from him.

The 5 centavo piece I was referring to was the 1904 in MS66, in your signature. I thought it was a proof. What 1930-M are you talking about? In any case, whatever one it was, it couldn't have been a proof; none minted.

By the way, how did you get interested in these coins?

Coming back to our bright young Filipina friend, I'm afraid the uglies on this board are going to drive her away pretty fast. First there was that Tumuss guy and now tsacch. When I saw BYF's reaction to his Tagalog comment, I phoned over to a friend in the Philippines who translated it as approximately "an offer to bite her in a particular spot that I doubt she wants to be bitten."

I am just disgusted that instead of welcoming a young woman like that to the boards, they try to outdo themselves in ugliness. And she nailed that last one -- correctly in my opinion -- as a pious hypocrite. With his signature talking about family and kids and then apparently making an ugly pass at a young girl possibly the age of his daughter, if he has one.

I was so ticked off that I was going to leave this board myself. I probably would have if I hadn't also spotted your nice post.

So thank you, and maybe we can put this ugliness behind us so she and we can enjoy ourselves.

    Best wishes,

    Just Having Fun!

  • unfortunately, I think it's just the "showing off of the language!". Of course Russ' icon doesn't help!imageimage

The 5 centavo piece I was referring to was the 1904 in MS66-NGC graded it 65BN and I could've missed on this as Jon thought it had a shot at 66RB. I've always thought that something happened to this one, perhaps effected by Florida's humidity when I submitted it(came from Norma Elwell btw)-it came back browner than before I sent it....

believe it or not, my dealer showed me a 44-45 mint set of these(the ones graded 65/66 in the ngc registry) and I fell in love with them from that point on! Then you and Jon came along!......

Well you know....kapitid mo (my brother) who is teaching me Tagalog told me it means 'I want to bite her (certain area)...and 'her" pertains to the lady on the coin..........not the BYF..........I dont know BYF and didnt mean it as an insult or remark to her, I do apoligize. It was kind of a Filapina/American joke..........which got lost in the translation, so back to kapatid mo for more lessons.

I imagined it to be not much worse than 'you suck', 'bite me' or the like that spewed every day on the forum, and they are in jest.....as was this.......and it was in a foreign tongue, not English.

And for those who still have a sense of humor............. Halikon mo ang puwit ko.....paki. Paalam...tapos na ako.

  • Hi Eugene: I must have been hallucinating. The 5 centavo piece I was talking about is actually that gorgeous 1/2 centavo in your signature.

Paigow Johnny: That looks like a nice coin. But remember, the pesos come relatively inexpensive in AU, so if you can afford it, I'd recommend holding out for au.

Hello Tsacch: Thanks for clarifying and for being big enough to apologize for the misunderstanding. Much appreciated.

    enjoy,

  • Wow, Eugene, that half centavo is spectacular. When the toning is right, it doesn't matter that the coin isn't red. This is a great example of that.

How do you do get the scans into these conversations, like you do? And how can I get them into my signature? If you can tell me, I'll give it a try.

I don't think the issue is to whom it was directed. BYF's issue is that she's coming into a forum to discuss coins, yet is confronted with smut. I don't speak Tagalog so I can't vouch for what you wrote, but I'm sure I could write a few choice English words that would offend a great many posters here. It was an inappropriate thing to write no matter who it was directed at.
