A question for the bust coinage folks....

I was wondering if anybody pays a premium for attractive bust coins with an R.3 rating, or expects a premium when selling an R.3 coin? Or do the premiums only kick in with R.4 and R.5 coins??

Speaking only for myself. I've never noticed a premium for an R-3 coin in any Bust half I've purchased.
I don't collect by variety, but I would imagine a variety collector that needed or wanted a certain coin could/would pay a bit of a premium.

I did recently buy an R-5 Bust half though.

  • For bust half dollars there is no or very little premium for R3 coins; a little for R4. A meaningful premium doen't kick in until R5.
  • I can't say about the bust coins but in other series that I collect by variety it IS possible for a lower rariety variety to command a premium but it has to be a variety that is unusually popular in it's own right. For example 1798 S151, the close overdate with short fracion bar, is an R-3 but it has a higher list price than the S-146 and 147 and almost as high as the S-183. All of those are R-5 1798 cents. (The S-151 is unusually popular becase it is the most common of the two close 98/7 overdates for this year. (The other one, S-150 is a TOUGH R-5 that almost always comes in Scudzy condition.)
