Worst house on the block goes for Record Amount!!!

I want to start by saying I ONLY want to be educated with this posting. I am making NO judgements or jokes about this topic...

I have been trying to understand why PO-1 or FR-2 coins CAN and HAVE commanded premium bids? Is'nt that like the worst house on the block selling for a record amount? I understand that it could be a Pop 1/99999 coin....but I am confused?

Thanks -
Tom

    It's a niche market.

A better analogy might be found in TV ratings. The worst shows always seem to come out on top.

  • Well - it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me either - but smoe folks like to make registry sets of the worse possible graded coins they can get a hold of - so more power to them! image

More power to them. Anything on the extremes is generally cool.

If you're trying to put together a grading set, guess which coins are the hardest ones to locate, hands-down?
    When in doubt, don't.
  • I recently sold a 50c RI commem. ANACS AU50 to OUTHAUL. I am sure that it will be cracked and carried to hopefully grade a 1 some day. I love it. Just one more way to make coin collecting exciting, fun and popular.

    Have a Great Day!

The worst house on the block is fairly rare in the coin world.

Think about how hard it is to get a coin that might have usually seen little circulation, or after circulation would usually see a ton of damage (been cleaned, scratched, corroded, etc.) in a condition where the only thing it has is wear--no damage, just honest wear. That's not easy.

  • It's an object lesson in how the registry set concept has artifically inflated the price of even the $hittiest coins.

"I know what I'll do... I'll pay $500 for a total piece of garbage that can barely be distinguished from a corroded slug of sheet metal, even if it only books at $25. Yeah, yeah! That'll make me cool!"

I guess it goes to show that a fool and his money are soon parted.
  • If this PO-1 and FR-2 craze keeps escalating, were going to have debates over "AC" and "NC" -- "aritifically circulated" and "naturally circulated" image

Excuse the comedians; a serious reply to follow. I think the poor (but original.............we think) condition coins represent a type of eye appeal different than the norm. We see it in pls/dmpls, my specialty. We see it also in colorfully toned Morgans. We also see it in the very very circulated grades. Before you criticize them, check out what some of them look like -- Braddick can supply some wonderful examples, particularly a Kennedy that looks very attractive today, but never ..................ever.......................in a shape that was supposed to draw interest amd engender eye appeal.
