Has anyone ever seen the 1861 IHC graded MS68

I'm going to guess that there was one graded MS-68, I believe I was looking at the the Ally (SP) collection, that contained a MS-67. pop showed 1 higher then this coin. Has anyone ever seen this coin, and perhaps have a picture of it.

I guess why I'm thinking about it, how many IHC's for all years have been graded MS-68. Does anyne have any pics.

Thanks all.

I was lucky enough to see it and the 1899 68RD at FUN 2003.

That and the 1858 LL in 67 were highlights for me. The 1856 MS66 wasn't bad either. Quite an auction.

  • That coin is crazy. Just looking at the closeup pics, I feel that a grade of MS67 would not suffice, and I don't feel that way about a lot of 68s I've seen.

If I remember right Laura made some bids on the 1861. This page has an earlier image of the coin taken by Rick Snow.

I owned the 1861 IHC PCGS MS68 when I was co-owner of Eagle Eye Rare Coins. We aquired this coin from the Alan Epstein Collection which we purchased in early 1996. The coin was later sold to the Joe Gorrell collection for about $14.000. In 2003 Mr Gorrell sold the coin North of $50,000 with Hertigage Rare Auctions.

    Thanks everyone,

Words can not describe that one. I wish I could of seen that one in person as well the 1899.
I found the link for the 1899 from the Fun show 1899, in case anyone was interested.

Congrats Brian on the results of the 1861.

Ron - an interesting side note is the PCGS pops lists 3 MS68 IH's, these two ex. Epstein's and 1 other 1899, but the second 1899 doesn't exist (according to more informed sources than myself). So these are the two highest graded business strikes of the series, and combined with the 1877 66RD and many other great coins it was a can't miss show for IH people. The bidding was insane, as you can see from the prices realized. If I remember right the 1877 and 1899 went to a relentless phone bidder while the 1861 went to the floor. I felt the same way Poseidon did about both MS68's -- they were a cut above most 67's so they got the jump. It's hard to imagine any MS IH at that grade, what do you have to compare it to?

BWRC - didn't Epstein buy back the 1899 from you because he regretted selling his favorite?
  • Shylock: and Captainron:

Shylock, the 1861 went to a phone bidder also. It is believed to have gone to the same winning bidder of the MS68 1899. I looked at both for a long time. The 1899 was like a temple. PERFECTLY beautiful. I went there thinking I was going to own it for sure.

The 1861 winning bid was $47,500.

When the 1899 came up at the auction floor, Stewart Blay stood up and waived his card high in the air!!! Started around $25,000. I then KEPT MY CARD IN THE AIR, and everyone told me to stand up too! SO I DID! We battled back and forth! At $55,000, I yelled to Stewart," I give up, you can have it!!!". But it WASN'T over yet!! The phone bidder then placed his first bid, but now Stewart was against him, not me anymore. STEW GAVE UP after the phone bid was $60,000. We BOTH lost. I don't know who the owner is, but at the time, he (she) owns BOTH, and yes, only two known 68 IHC's.

I thought about the 1861, but I thought the 1899 blew it away. But they are both spectacular.

BTW, I had purchased many others from that auction including the 1864-L on RIBBON PCGS PR64RB. And another thing, a dealer purchased the 1856 MS66 for $103,500 with the juice. A YEAR later, the same coin sold for ... $172,500....

Lloyd that post sent shivers, man the excitement of watching that auction sounds comparable to watching an All-Star game.
Wish I could of been there just to seen the excitement of bidding.

Lloyd do you by any chance have any pics of the Proof 64 L, I can only dream to own one.

So what is the some theorys behind the other 1899, just curiuos.

    Thanks again guys.

Shylock I enjoyed your altered surfaces site.

  • So why isn't there a color designation on this coin??

Sliderider - I'm going to guess that you are referring to the 1861 without a color designation. The copper IHC cents from 1859 - 1864 do not have color designations. Color designations start on the Bronze cents in 1864 (Or prior Bronze patterns I believe).

  • It's an old holder, someone should crack it out and submit it for the ms69 hehe

I am so pathetic and behind the times. I have NO pictures of my coins. I dont even know how everyone in these forums not only has great pictures, but how they link them to show up here, and so fast!!!. My sister-in-law knows how to do all that stuff, but haven't had the time yet. I will get my act together, I promise.

I'm sure you can go to Heritage's permanent auction archives, and my 1864 L Proof is in there...Gorrell collection or signature sale during F.U.N., January, 2003.

It is believed there is only ONE 68 1899, and that the pop report for PCGS is wrong, that it is the same coin... But if the pop report STILL says 2 today, well, I don't know for sure then!!!

I also believe the population report is wrong on the 1899. There is only 1 MS68RD at PCGS for the entire series.

Check out the 1894 Doubled Date in MS66rd, population shows 0 with 1 graded in MS66RB. The fact is no MS66RB exists and Lakesamm collection has the MS66RD that shows a 0 population. image

Paul, the story on the 1899 MS68RD goes something like this. Rick and I calculate our buy price on the coin at $10,000! which was about 4X what a common date 67RD was going for at the time. Alan, calls us a few days later and is having sellers remorse about the coin. To make Alan happy we sell him the coin back for $12,000. Maybe a month or so later he calls us back and tells us he is ready to part with it for good. I believe we pay him $12,000 for the coin. We then call Joe Gorrell who buys the coin for $14,000. He also bought the 1861 MS68 from us for the same price.

From a guy who actually owned (even though a short time) the 1861 MS68 and the 1899 MS68RD the handsdown winner between those two coins, in my opinion was the 1899 PCGS MS68RD. Its is truly a wonder coin.
