Ken guys- Do these 1968-D halves have a shot@67

Scan is bad but you can see the surface preservation. One coin, which is evident has a haze from the mint set. The other had the same haze, was dipped but left spots. Do they still have a shot at 67?

  • BTW - I hate my scanner.
  • Tough to grade with the scans, but based on them, the left Kennedy has no chance at 67.

  • You have to do something about the spottiness before you can even think of submitting them. The first one is obviously worse than the second.

I have no idea on how to remove it safely if it is even possible. The coin has great luster, nearly pristine surfaces but the spots are ugly. Suggestions on removal techniques would be appriciated. Maybe NCS is the way to go with this coin?

    Clack,

A LARGE portion of the grade for a MS coin that goes 67 is flash and luster. IF NCS could remove the junk, leaving perfectly clean surfaces with plenty of pop, the marks on the face of the coin on the left (immediately beside and above the mouth) will limit it to a 6 IMO, and the one on the right has a small mark by the MM, but is the better shot coin IF it regains the luster and flash of a 67. They're both decent coins, but I'd probably spend the $25 on the one on the right NCS'd and holdered. Good luck. image

I agree. Many fall into the trap that a Kennedy with very few marks (if any) will bump up the coin into the Superb catagory. FLASH & LUSTER (pure and simple: I've yet to see a currated Kennedy qualify) are absolutely REQUIRED to even enter the doorway of MS67.
