1952 topps third series on grey card stock

Hello,
question for all you card nuts i have two 52 topps cards from the third series that are on grey card stock instead of the standard white. I heard that they were made from leftover stock form the second series. The beckett almanac says that were a canadain release.

My question is how rare are they and what is there true origin?

Thanks
P. S. good job on mlhooker what a scammer!

I am not collecting the set but do have some 52T cards of some HOF'ers and am not sure of the question. To my knowledge, all 52's were printed on grey stock - the only variation that I am aware of is the fact that the first series (1-80), were either printed in black/red ink or black ink alone - the black is the more rare of the two: I do have an Irvin in the black variation.

I did a little checking and could not find a reference to any other card stock color.
    Anyone?

  • Stone,
Cards 131 thru 190 (third Series) were printed on white card stock unlike the other cards in the set. I attached a scan to show what I mean. Hope this clarifies it a little. first time i've tried to attach something here so I hope it works.

My bad, first I didn't read your post clearly - I didn't even know that there was a Canadian version of the 52T set...also, I wasn't aware that there was a stock color difference in any series. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

edit: one thing I'm curious about - why isn't there are reference to this variation in the "Master Set" on the registry?

  • Mike,
I'm not sure why this isn't mentioned. Maybe psa hasn't seen it before. I have know idea how rare they are? The master register also looks over the frank campos #307 black star variation, as well as the two version of the mantle, robinson, and thompson cards.

the card you found on ebay is on white cardstock if you compare it the sellers other 52 topps he is selling. must be dirty or just a darker scan.

if i am not mistaken there is so many variations in 52 topps that most do not differentiate between any copy. a few months ago the mantle alone was shown here on the bds to have quite a few. my guess is that those that collect the set only diferentiate between the red and black backs. machodoc would be a good person to ask regarding this.

also white and gray backs are found in many sets up to and including 1960
    Good for you.

I think you're right Steve. I think I'm in total brain cramp! We have discussed the Mantle and others before and they were not gray backs...pretty dumb. What about the reference by Twins of the Canadian connection? Were any 52T's produced in Canada back then? I only know of OPC.

  • Mike,
The canadian connection that I'm referring to is from the beckett alamanac. It says-

"Some cards issued in Canada, (131-190) have also been reported, these cards have a "muted" tone on the front and use a grey stock reverse."

As far as the mantle I know of only two Variations. The easiest way to tell them apart is by which way the stiching on the baseball with the card number in it is pointing. There is also a missing pixel on one of those variations. As well as other little things.

Win pitcher who is machodoc? I'm just three cards away from a complete 52 topps set. and I was considering going after these lesser known variations?

Machodoc rarely posts on this forum. The people who really get into all the variations on the sets would be found on the Registry Forum - he posts often over there. That is your best bet. I am not a real big vintage set collector (only working on 2 sets) and rarely pay attention to the fine details of the sets with respect to variations.
    Good luck.
