Home Trading Cards & Memorabilia Forum

I was like a kid in a candy shop today...

Twice a month in the Detroit area is a show, typically the same dealers... I stopped in late this afternoon on my way home from an appointment and after cruising around for an hour, talking to a few dealers that I know, I was on my way down the last aisle and this dealer had case after case of complete sets in binders from 1954 through 1975 or so... and he had just bought them all from a large collection and was selling them off, and today was the first time they were offered. Every card was in the binders, except the few he had sold earlier in the day (but none of the big cards had been sold yet because there's generally not much money at this show)... and he was selling them at 75-80% of Beckett prices (majority of 60's cards were EX-EXMT)... so, needless to say, I spent the final hour of the show picking through whatever I could and wound up pulling 18 of the most pristine cards from the 60's sets. None of the big stars were in that great of shape, but the cards I found are very nice. Near perfect centering on all of them, all measure up standard, sharp corners, nice gloss...

I figure they will grade:

1960 Rocky Colavito - 8
1960 Norm Cash - 8
1965 Tigers Rookies (Jim Northrup) - 9
1965 Red Shoendist SP - 9
1966 Mickey Lolich - 8
1966 Max Alvis - 8
1966 AL RBI Leaders - 8
1963 AL HR Leaders - 8
1969 Denny McLain - 8
1969 Dick Kelley - 8
1969 Pirates Rookies - 8
1969 Bob Veale - 9
1969 Williams/Epstein - 9
1969 Luis Tiant - 9
1969 Bob Watson - 10
1969 Dan Osinski - 8
1969 John Kennedy - 9
1969 Ed Sprague - 9

And I paid a grand total of $120

I am tempted to go back tomorrow morning and keep looking. I literally could have spent the entire day there looking through these cards cherry picking. And the dealer didn't mind, he was happy to start recouping his costs and flat out said he didn't want to go through them all. He had football and hockey and basketball, literally, every set major made during the 60's, and I didn't even have a chance to look at them. I'm salivating at the prospects of going back... it's a 30 minute drive and a full day of tedious work... but no doubt if I decide to do it and drop a grand or two, I'll wind up with some sweet cards at a great price.

Great find! That's the most fun anybody can have is picking out raw cards to grade.

Did you loupe the cards at the show to determine what you thought was the difference between 8 and 9 or did you pull the best looking ones and examine them at home?

Yeah, it is the Gibraltar show...

I went back today... time flies when you're having fun I guess, as I sat at the table for nearly 5 hours going through mostly EX - EXMT material to find the gems.... and more gems I found...

But the deal of the day was a Chamberlain rookie from the same guy... no doubt an 8 once it's graded, paid just over $650 for it.

You had quite a day! The Chamberlain looks great! If the corners are as good as they look in the scan - I think you will get that 8 - the centering T/B is just there IMO.
Congratulations on a great day! I would be hiddin that stuff from my wife if I had your two day binge.
