Look what I found GOLD

I found this in my grandfathers collection.
He has been talking about this coin since I was a kid, and well I finally got it.
My mouth dropped and was pretty upset by what happened to the coin.

Guess the Grade and Value.

I know the HOle and engraving hurts big time.

Is it a $2 1/2 or $5? I don't collect these but I think that hole really hurts it and although the engraving is neat I think it lowers the number of potetial buyers/bidders. I like the history behind it and if it were mine it would stay in the family. VF money might be a bit generous. mike
  • Its a $2.50.
The history behind this coin is.

My grandfather a Hardcore Irish manahattan cop stopped by the "gin mill" aka pub after his shift and while at the pub at coin dealer/ collector knew my grandfather was a collector. So the guy stuck this in my grandfathers hand.
My grandfather didnt pay much attention to it until he felt the coin was heavy unlike other coins.
The engraving and hole was before I grandfather got it.
Its been in the family since 1949.

Taking the coin to a local dealer, to show it off tomorrow.

I agree with Mike... however the coin is "grade-wise," remember where its value comes from. The problems are irrelevant.

      • Actually, I think it's cool... If I had found that in my grandfathers collection, hell would freeze over before I sold that coin... you should find out the history of the coin... why was "Grandmother" engraved in it? Is 1807 a special date in particular? Perhaps it was your Grandfather's Grandmother who was perhaps born in 1807? The sentimental value and probable story behind the coin make the grade and value a moot point...

      • Nope wasnt in our pocession until 1949.
My Great Great Grandmother was born in Ireland in 1840s.
trust I wish I had more history on this. And this isnt the oldest coin in his collection.
1731 King George II Half Crown probibly has the most history which Im gonna find out more soon.

      • What a great coin, I was really struck as I slowly scrolled and got to the engraving, and then the date. I think that coin is going to mean ever more to you as the years go by. Congrats.

I agree - keep it as a great piece of family history. I wouldn't remove the ring either, even though it will drive you a bit crazy since you can't put it in an album.

        Very cool
      • That is a neat coin with some personal history. It is hard to imagine so few were minted and now you have one that was in your family for years.
      • Its only been 55 years.
Coin collector gave it to my gandfather and it sat in a metal bin till I received it a month ago.
There isnt any history to the coin at all.
I just wish I knew who the coin collector was and how he got the coin.

My grandfather and I do not see this as much of a collectors item for us.

        Too late. image

I think I recall you mentioning this coin before- I'm glad to see a picture of it.

Sure, the hole and the engraving might bring it down below the price of an undamaged coin, but that is still a very, very cool (and rare!) love token.

That is a fantastic piece. I totally LOVE it. (Is anybody surprised?) image

As previously mentioned, the story behind that piece makes the problems irrelevant. If it were mine, I'd never sell it.

      • One of the true joys of collecting coins is the thought of being able to pass them on to your kids (or grandkids) even if they are not that interested in collecting. It will be something they will remember about you and perhaps help them recall you fondly over the years as other images fade.

The fact that your grandfather saved it (and kept it for all this time just for you) makes it something hard to put a value on. It will mean even more as you someday (hopefully) leave it to your kids or grandkids.

If you someday sell all your other coins, at least keep this one.image
