The sovereign type set is something I almost started, myself. A neat idea.

That idea I actually like. But as you say, it would be impossible to do.

Australian colonial tokens, I've only ever seen one in person and it was awesome, and I know nothing about them, just the first thing that popped in my head.
  • I think a Canadian type set would do nicely image

Guineas are a far classier denomination.

I think Luvdawgs knows our Ajaan too well!image That is an accomplishable challenge and he does breathe Canadian air much of the time...image

He might also add the Maritimes-many beautiful coins there and then dabble in the multitude of bank tokens and commem's available from Canada. That would also retain the British flavor that Don enjoys.

They are without question one of the most interesting coins ever issued, but collecting them is a slow process. You can't just walk into any coin shop and expect them to have Guineas in stock

Except Geo III ones, never a shortage of those (except 1813 and the really early ones).

Anne, Will III and Geo I you could wait a lifetime. Especially if you want the Elector guinea.

If you think guineas are hard try half guineas...

Amen! A tad more accessible in the day. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if a fair number of those might be turned up by a detectionist owing to their small size......pity, LM isn't a Brit. I'd bet he may have found a few.
  • I'd recommend 18th and 19th century French coins. They seem very interesting and quite often, undervalued.

I wish!! (That I'd found some, that is.)

Well, OK, sometimes I wish I was a Brit, too. Quite often, in fact, when it comes to detector daydreams.

Half-guineas do get found- I've seen people post them online. (The only one in my possession is a 1787 on the Holey Gold Hat.)

But just as many or more guineas are found. I have heard of one being found here in my hometown, in Hanover Square (how appropriate!). I think it was dated 1766, but what made it especially intriguing was the "EB" Ephraim Brasher counterstamp in the obverse field! I have also heard of a guinea of about the same era being found at a river crossing near an old ferry site in the South Carolina Low Country.

ajaan has decided to concentrate on finishing his Canadian date sets. I only need 4 coins for the 50c (I don't include the 1921), only 4 for the 20/25c, 4 for the 5c silver, and a bunch for the 10c set which I just started. The Dollar set has been inactive for a few years now so I need a lot of them but that won't get worked on until the others are finished. I already have finished the 5c nickel, small cents, and large cents sets.
