Mantle rookie scam du jour

Feedback of 10, never sold a card before, just tossing in a raw Mantle rookie with some modern inserts and a '61 Whitey Ford in sad shape. No reprints, guaranteed to grade. Of course, by the time the bad news comes back from PSA, this guy and your money are long gone .....

Yea, I had also seen this lot from this jerk. The usual scam with a 52 Mantle and some other cards or lots. Seems like the same 2, 3 or 4 scammers over and over again. Using new names, hijacked names, etc., etc. Ebay really needs to come up with some type of much better identity/address verification system.
  • Hey spend $9000 dollars on this lovely fake mantle and will throw in a bunch of s*#! cards to sweeten the deal! Go scam your grandma pal.

    Here's the title:

MANTLE '52 TOPPS #311 ROOKIE PSA 9 RUTH GEHRIG FORD!

Realize how many different kinds of searches will pull up this auction? I'm surprised he didn't include the word "porn" in his title somewhere....

His "10" feedback is all as a buyer of chump change stuff. Better yet -he has a store with more Mantle cards other auto's. Slam - bam and gone?
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

I'll guarantee the auction never makes it to the end. eBay has actually been shutting down the obvious scammers, and I basically put the regulars out of business when I made the 52 Mantle guide and started offering it on eBay back in May. Additionally, many auctions for these 52 Mantle cards have completed but I know for certain the deal died after the end of the auction because I've had contact with the buyer. Amazing how many elect to buy access to my guide for $10 shortly after they win an auction for $3000, only then to discover it's a fake card and reneg on the deal.

But...new 1952 Mantle's have surfaced recently that actually look exactly like the real card from a scan because they are made from a legitimate card being copied and printed onto cardstock. The cardstock actually feels pretty thick, but a quick glance at one in person with a loupe will reveal it's entirely in half-tone, including the white areas. They are also opaque, so direct light will pass right through them which is a dead giveaway. However, those sellers have a much better chance of getting away with it than the other pathetic morons like this bozo.

I've heard about these modern Mantle repros with no reprint disclaimer. Incredible.

What amazes me, and makes me laugh in a disgusted sort of way, is that these clowns think this is so clever. To take a 1990s reproduction, rub in dirt a little, round the corners a bit, and then list it on eBay as follows:

"My father/grandfather/uncle had this card since he was a boy. I don't know anything about cards, but I'm pretty sure it's worth something. It doesn't say reprint anywhere, so I think it is real."

Or there just happens to be some paper damage on the back where "reprint" was to be found. Or any of the other common ploys they use trying to trap people who think they'll find a 52T Mantle on eBay for a bargain price.

I guess they wouldn't keep doing it if people didn't keep falling for it. At least we have the satisfaction of knowing there are few less victims because of these boards, and the members who warn bidders in these scams.

Speaking of Mantle auction scams, get a load of this one...

Can this moron make it any more obvious that he's trying to rip someone off? I didn't think people could be this dumb, but I guess I was wrong.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
