Somewhat OT: World paper money catalogs??

Now I like to snatch up neat bank notes every now and then. Especially French colonial ones (some of that stuff would be better referred to as art!). But I like everything.

Here's the stupid question of the day: What kind of catalogs are there for paper money?

I know Pick is the one everyone and their grandmother refers to, but the last one I noticed on Amazon that has all countries in it is a 1986 edition! (unless I'm missing something?) From there things get broken into either the General Issues to 196X, Special Issues or Modern Issues. (There may be more, I dunno) I'm confused!

I guess what I'm asking is, for all you guys who collect the stuff, which reference do you use (if not all) and why?

I'm thinking of getting this one since it covers all the good colonial stuff. But I'd also like to keep up with modern specimens and oddities like that.. any advice?

  • I was going to venture into paper money a while ago (idea has subsided fortunately for now) and indeed the Pick issues are the Krause equivalents in the world of paper money. A quick browse at Amazon indicates that Pick may not be part of the series' authors anymore, though.

There are two basic issues - 1961-present and for everything before. It seems that the Specialized issues book is akin to "Collecting World Coins" or the book about German coinage.

I have viewed such a catalog and I find it very interesting. Here's the Link but there may be a newer edition. Actually, a superficial search at Amazon proves to be quite confusing imageimage

    That's just my amateur opinion.

There are three volumes of the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money published by Krause:

Vol. One -- Specialized Issues. Concentrates on regional and bank issues, instead of national issues; it also contains the listings for Philippine Guerrilla notes and some other siege currency.

Vol. Two -- General Issues. Covers notes issued from 1650 to 1960.

Vol. Three -- Modern Issues. This covers from 1961 to date and is updated annually.

You'll pretty much want all three of the Pick books because you will run into notes from all three before long. Expect to pay about $150, but it is well worth it.

... and then there's Notgeld and other non-metallic goodies not included in the Krause books. image

Actually, you can probably live without Vol. 1; a lot of it is 19th century material. Vol. 2 is key, especially for what you're interested in.

I don't like to make a habbit of disagreeing with Askari, but I for one am glad I have Vol. 1 and I don't even collect world currency in any way that could be called serious.

Hey, guys, thanks for all the great info here image You really cleared up something that's been confusing me for a while (I just haven't had the time to research lately, plus I've yet to find a library with a copy of any of these books!)

I think, just for starters, I'm going to seek out a copy of the General Issues volume. It seems better suited for my focus areas. So how's the coverage of pictures in these books? A lot of things left out? All B&W I assume? This looks to be a fun venture once I become a bit more knowledgable!

And speaking of which, does anyone know of a good web forum like ours here regarding world currency?

    Thanks again!
